GREENSBORO, N.C. –
Tyler Young scored twice in the opening 3:33 to lift Campbell to a 3-1 win over No. 30 UNC Greensboro Thursday night at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
Gerard Broussard tacked on an insurance strike in the 84th minute as the Camels (1-0) knocked off the defending Southern Conference champion.
Theo Collomb drew UNCG within 2-1 in the 33rd minute, but the Camels behind sophomore keeper
Edu Rodriguez – who saved Collomb's penalty in the 51st minute – did not concede again.
"It was a fantastic way to start, capitalizing quickly into the match," said Fonder of Young's third and fourth minute strikes. "We had a good commitment and togetherness about our group tonight. The number one thing that showed was great character and commitment from this group. That's a good UNCG team that's going to win a lot of games, and this will be a resume builder later in the year."
Just 2:27 into the contest, freshman
Bjarne Lips played the ball into space for Young, and the sophomore beat UNCG keeper Niclas Wild one-on-one.
Only 1:06 elapsed before Young scored again on a one-timer and the Camels went in front 2-0.
UNCG finished with a 14-9 edge in shots, but three of CU's five attempts on target found the net. Rodriguez made five saves, while Wild finished with two.
Campbell, which improved to 2-3-1 against nationally-ranked teams since the start of the 2019 campaign, hosts Davidson Sunday in a 6:00 p.m. kickoff.
