GREENSBORO, N.C. – Campbell nearly doubled up host UNC Greensboro in shots Sunday night, but neither team was able to score in a 0-0 draw at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
Campbell (2-2-2) extended its shutout string to 212 minutes, while UNCG (1-2-4) played to its fourth tie in as many extra time opportunities this season.
The Camels finished with 10 corner kicks, out-shot the hosts 19-10, hit the post in the second half and twice saw chances miss just wide in extra time.
"We left a few goals out there today, but we also got a clean sheet against a very good in-state team that's very organized," said Campbell head coach
Samar Azem. "I'm excited about what we've been able to take out of non-conference play, and this game especially allowed us to see more things we want to tighten up. I'm really excited about this week and about this team."
Senior keeper
Reaghan Duval finished with five saves for her second-straight shutout in the Camel nets. She made a stop on Ally Hackett's attempt inside the 6-yard box in the 84th minute to keep the game scoreless.
Campbell's best opportunity of the night came after 64 minutes of play when
Jackie Richards sent a left-footed cross into the area.
Amber Liston rose for a free header that beat UNCG keeper Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper, but bounded off the left post.
Late in the first OT period, Liston's left-footed shot barely slipped wide of the left post.
Mary Tierney came forward from her left back position in the 103rd minute to send a heavy ball just wide left.
Campbell had one last opportunity in the final minute when
Reagan Baiotto dribbled into space at the top of the box, but she shot right into Tyler-Cooper's grasp and the final seconds elapsed without further action.
"I thought we made the game a little bit harder for ourselves when we had the ball," said Azem. "But we created a lot more goal scoring chances. We just have to do a better job at the details."
The Camels begin conference action Saturday in a 7:00 p.m. kick-off at High Point in a rematch of the 2020-21 Big South final. Campbell claimed a 4-3 victory over the Panthers last April at Vert Stadium to earn the league title and a berth in the NCAA College Cup.
