Back at Barker-Lane
Campbell made its long-awaited return to Barker-Lane Stadium on September 11 against Elon, 665 days since last hosting a football game in Buies Creek (vs. No. 15 Monmouth, November 16, 2019).

After playing a four-game schedule in 2020, all on the road with limited capacity, Campbell is welcoming 100 percent capacity at Barker-Lane Stadium in 2021.

Last time out
Elon rallied from a 10-point deficit in the third quarter, then withstood a late Campbell comeback attempt to earn a 24-23 win at Barker-Lane Stadium.

Campbell cut the lead to one with 1:11 remaining on Hajj-Malik Williams' second touchdown strike to Caleb Snead of the night. However, Williams was hauled down on a quarterback keeper on the ensuing two-point conversion. Dylan Tucker recovered the onside kick and the Phoenix took a knee twice to run out the clock.

Davis Cheek completed 22-of-37 passes for 269 yards and two scores, and Elon converted two Camel turnovers in the fourth quarter into 10 points as the Phoenix rallied from a 17-7 deficit.

Leading the Camels
QB Hajj-Malik Williams has thrown for 335 yards and four touchdowns, also rushing for a team-high 94 yards through two games. Lamagea McDowell has also rushed for 85 yards, while Caleb Snead has caught seven passes for 132 yards and three touchdowns.

Keshawn Thompson has paced the Camels on the defensive side with 22 tackles, while Roy Yancey owns a team-high 2.0 stops for loss, adding 12 tackles. Malik Grate has also broken up two passes, adding 10 tackles.

Scouting Presbyterian
Off to a 2-0 start, Presbyterian has outscored its opponents 152-46, topping St. Andrews 84-43 in its opener and Fort Lauderdale 63-3 last week.

Ren Hefley is averaging 442.5 passing yards per game, tossing 14 touchdowns on the season, including 10 against St. Andrews. Matthew Rivera and Jalyn Witcher have combined for seven TDs and 391 receiving yards, while Delvecchio Powell owns 129 rushing yards. Jayden Martin has notched a team-high 12 tackles with an interception.

Still a Big South member in other sports, PC and Campbell matched up on the football field as conference foes in 2018 and 2019, with the Camels winning both Big South bouts 38-6 in Clinton, S.C. for CU's first-ever Big South Conference win, and 28-14 in Buies Creek a year later. The Blue Hose, however, lead the all-time series 3-2, taking the first three all-time matchups, all nonconference contests.

PC was originally scheduled to make a trip to Buies Creek in 2020, but the game was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Looking ahead
Before starting Big South play at North Alabama on October 2, Campbell will have its bye week with an open date on September 25.

The trip to Florence, Ala., which will count as a Big South Conference game for the first time in the series, will be the first of two straight road matchups for the Camels to starter league play, also heading to Gardner-Webb on October 9.

Campbell returns to Buies Creek for its Big South home opener on October 16, hosting No. 20 Monmouth.

Williams hits career mark
junior quarterback Hajj-Malik Williams surpassed 3,000 career passing yards on Saturday, becoming the second Campbell QB to hit the milestone (Daniel Smith – 3,471 – 2017-18). Williams has now collected 3,039 career passing yards in 17 career games, including six against FBS opponents. The junior is also just 44 rushing yards shy of 1,000 for his career.

Snead back in the end zone
Caleb Snead hauled in two more touchdowns with 62 yards on three catches against Elon, giving the redshirt senior seven receptions for 132 yards with three TDs already in 2021. Snead, playing just his third season on the field, is second all-time in CU receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, and has scored 18 career touchdowns in only 22 games.

His first score of the day put Campbell on the board in the first after a blocked punt, snagging a nine-yard TD over an Elon defensive back in the corner of the end zone. He added another TD with 1:11 to play in regulation, fending off two more Elon defenders for a 48-yard touchdown, bringing Campbell within 24-23.

Heartbreaker
The loss to Elon was Campbell's fourth straight in a one score game dating back to 2019. The Camels also suffered a 27-26 loss at Georgia Southern in their 2020 opener. Campbell was 3-2 in one score games in 2019.

Block that kick
Reece Moulton notched Campbell's first blocked punt since its 2019 win at Gardner-Webb (10/26/19) in the Camels' week two 24-23 loss to Elon. The block set up CU's first score of the night against the Phoenix.

The game marked the third time a Campbell team has blocked two kicks (punt or field goal) in a game in its modern history (since 2008), and just the second time the Camels have blocked both a field goal and a punt in the same games (10/22/16 vs. Stetson).

The Camels also blocked two punts against Apprentice in 2011 (9/10/11).

Sasser Cup – athletic department success
After seven sports advanced to NCAA postseason competition, Campbell produced its highest finish ever – 79th – in the 2020-21 Learfield Directors' Cup standings. For the third-straight year, Campbell finished among the country's top 100 Division I athletic programs.  For the 2020-21 season, Campbell finished with 234 points to rank 79th among 293 Division I members ranked.

Campbell, which finished 97th in the 2018 Directors' Cup and 99th one year later in the Directors' Cup program which started in 1993-94.  No Directors' Cup standings were compiled in 2020 due to the cancellation of winter and spring championships due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Fighting Camels – who advanced to the national stage in women's soccer, wrestling, baseball, softball, men's golf, women's golf and men's outdoor track and field – placed 10th among non-FBS schools, and 17th among non-Power 5 programs.

On the way to claiming the Big South Conference's Sasser Cup for the second-straight time, the Camels won six Big South championships in 2020-21 including four tournament crowns.  Campbell won the regular-season title in baseball and softball, while claiming the conference tournament championship in men's golf, women's golf, women's soccer, and softball.

CU claimed the Big South's automatic berth to NCAA postseason competition in women's soccer, women's golf, men's golf and softball. In addition, Campbell's Athanas Kioko qualified for the national championships in outdoor track and field, where he finished third in the 5,000 meters.  The baseball team received an at-large berth to the Starkville Regional and advanced to the final.  Competing as a member of the Southern Conference, the Camels won league regular season and tournament wrestling titles and sent a school-record seven athletes to the NCAA Championships.
