BUIES CREEK, N.C. –
Jalen James scored twice and Campbell defeated Georgia Southern 4-1 Saturday night at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
Kemy Amiche and
Caleb Martinez added goals and
Tyler Young had two assists for the Camels (4-2-1), who are unbeaten in their last four (3-0-1) outings.
Mauro Gutierrez-Solis scored for the Eagles (3-4), who dropped their second-straight match.
Campbell jumped in front in the 14th minute when James took a pass from
Sami Charaf Amal and slotted home his third goal of the year.
Moses Mensah hit the right post after 27 minutes, but the Camels doubled the lead after Amiche volleyed home Young's cross less than 60 seconds later.
Georgia Southern nearly cut the lead in half on Jeremiah Luoma's shot that just missed the top left corner in the 57th minute.
James then took advantage of an errant Eagle back pass after 62 minutes when he gathered the loose ball and lobbed Jose Eduard Bomfim from just inside the box.
Gutierrez-Solis brought Georgia Southern back within two in the 68th minute when he finished a right-footed chance off Omar Mustafic's assist.
The Camels sealed the win in the 89th minute when
Adrian Morales controlled the ball in the Georgia Southern third, fed Young, who laid the ball off to Martinez. The senior drilled a shot from 25 yards out past Bomfim for his first goal of the season.
Campbell finished with a 22-12 edge in shots and had 65 percent of the possession.
Edu Rodriguez finished with six saves in the Camel nets, while Bomfim had six stops for Georgia Southern.
"We were locked in and engaged from the first whistle, so this was a good testament to our character," said Campbell head coach
Dustin Fonder. "We're excited about scoring four goals. We want to be a high-octane offense, a team that can create chances, but we're upset with leaking a goal tonight. Our goal coming into the game was to keep a clean sheet. Unfortunately, we gave one away, so we'll clean that up in training the next couple of days."
Entering 11th in the country in goals scored, the Camels registered their fifth multiple-goal effort in seven outings this season. CU also improved to 20-2-4 in their last 26 home contests.
Campbell continues its 3-match home stand Tuesday (Sept. 21) at 7:00 p.m. vs. UNC Wilmington.
