Elon tops short-handed Camels 1-0

CU plays final hour with 10 men

ELON, N.C. – Sam Durand scored the game's only goal in the 44th minute and Elon withstood a late rally to defeat short-handed Campbell 1-0 Wednesday night at Rudd Field.

Jake Morris' apparent equalizer in the 83rd minute was waved off by an offside flag, and Daniel Hernandez hit the crossbar from close range with just over a minute to play for the Camels (6-3-1).

A five-match unbeaten string ended for Campbell, which went a man down in the 29th minute after Owen Mikoy was sent off for a foul and a breakaway.

Elon (5-4) went in front with just 1:50 remaining in the opening half when Durand headed in a cross from Jake Kelly.

Campbell, which entered the contest seventh in the country in goals scored per game (2.67), was shut out for just the second time this season – the other coming Sept. 14 at then fourth-ranked North Carolina.

"We're not happy with the result, but proud of the effort in a challenging situation," said Campbell head coach Dustin Fonder.  "We fought to the final whistle with 10."

The Camels out-shot the Phoenix 5-1 before Mikoy's red card, but Elon finished with an 11-8 edge in shots.

Campbell returns to Big South Conference play Saturday in a 4:00 p.m. kickoff at Presbyterian.
