BUIES CREEK, N.C. –
Diego Konincks scored twice,
Tyler Young had two assists, and Campbell defeated Saint Joseph's 4-1 Saturday night at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
Jalen James and Daniel Hernandez also scored for the Camels (2-1), who limited the Hawks (0-3) to just one shot in the opening half and five for the contest.
"We weren't pleased with our performance last Sunday," said head coach
Dustin Fonder. "So all week in training we worked on sharpening our mentality, playing more for one another, and that paid off tonight."
James nearly put the Camels in front in the 22nd minute when his right-footed blast outside the box banged off the right post.
Konincks, however, broke the deadlock just six minutes later when he nodded home a serve from
Sami Charaf Amal.
In the 36th minute,
Jake Morris slid a pass to James down the right side. James chipped SJU keeper Lars Haavie, but the ball skimmed the outside of the left post to leave the Camel advantage at one.
Konincks then finished Young's 50th minute corner kick to double the lead. However, the Hawks pulled one back on James Fletcher's first goal of the season just 27 seconds later.
Less than four more minutes elapsed before
Kemy Amiche slid a pass to Young, who laid the ball off to James, who slotted home a left-footed effort.
Hernandez then dribbled by four defenders and poked the ball by Haavie for the final strike with just 2:34 left on the clock.
"Jalen scored one and was dangerous on three or four others," said Fonder of his All-South winger. "I'm happy for him because he's a goal scorer. Once you get that first one, it starts to open up."
Campbell finished with an 11-5 edge in shots.
