Camels sweep second day of Invitational

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Fighting Camels (2-4) picked up their first two wins of the season with a Saturday sweep of Alabama State and NC Central at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Dunn Campbell Invitational. The Camels topped ASU (0-6) in four sets and closed the day with a straight-sets win over NCCU (1-3).

Campbell's Claranne Fechter and Melody Paige were each named to the all-tournament team. Fechter amassed 36 digs on the weekend at 3.6 digs/set to anchor the Campbell defense. The defense held opponents to hitting just .174 on the tournament. Paige picks up her second all-tournament selection in as many weeks by posting 24 kills at an efficient .333 clip. She also chipped in six total blocks.

Game One Recap
Campbell picked up its first win of the season with a four-set win over Alabama State saturday morning.

The Camel offese hit .225 for the match, the first time hitting over .200 this season. The attack was led by Melody Paige's 11 kills on .476 hitting. Lailah Green and Chloe Cook added nine kills each. All three marks were season highs.

Campbell looked to be in total control of the first set, leading by as many as 11 at 23-12, but ASU made it interesting. The Hornets rattled off an 8-1 run before a costly service error ended the set with a 25-20 Campbell win.

ASU capitalized on the momentum and took the second set 25-22. The Hornets grabbed a quick 4-1 lead and saw that hold the rest of the way. Campbell did tie the score a handful of times, but was never able to grab the lead in the frame.

Campbell flipped the script in the third with a 25-22 win of their own. A big 4-0 run in the middle of the set took the Camels from down one to up three, a lead they would not relinquish. Paige had her biggest hitting set in the third, posting five kills on just seven attacks.

The Camels posted their largest set win of the match in the fourth, closing it out with a 25-16 win. Campbell hit .391 in the final frame, its highest percentage of the day.

Game Two Recap
Campbell finished the Invitational with a straight-sets win over NCCU. The Eagles hung close in the first set and fell only 25-21. The set was tied at 16 all before an important 5-0 burst by the Camels gave them some breathing room. Sarah Colla paced the Camels in the first set with four kills on four attacks.

The second set was the most comfortable for the Camels, taking it 25-15. Chloe Cook had her biggest set with five kills, part of her team-high 13 for the match.

Cook repeated in the third set adding five more kills to her line to help close out the match in a 25-18 set. The defense aslo stepped up with 17 digs and three blocks in the set to end it.
