Football adds two to offensive staff

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell has added former NFL running back Dee Brown to its coaching staff, while promoting former all-conference offensive lineman Jacob Cuddington.

Brown will serve as the Camels' running backs coach, and Cuddington will coach tight ends.

In his role as the running backs coach, Brown is responsible for overseeing the development of the running backs both athletically and academically, assisting in all run game elements of the program.

Prior to joining the Camels, Brown was the offensive coordinator for Livingstone College in 2021. Accepting the position on the first day of fall camp, Brown had little time to implement his entire offense but was able to still produce 2,000 yards passing and a two-time conference Back of the Week, despite starting three walk-ons and two freshmen.

Before joining the college ranks, the Clearwater, Fla. native served as head coach for West Orange High School in Winter Garden, Fla. and from 2011-14 at Victory Christian Center School in Charlotte, N.C., where he led his teams to two state championships (2012 and 2014) and three title game appearances.

He also made coaching stops in the Charlotte, N.C. area as offensive coordinator at Rocky River High School, as well as an assistant coach at Lake Norman High and West Mecklenburg High.

Brown started his coaching career with the Denver Broncos under then head coach Josh McDaniels. In Denver, Brown assisted the special teams coordinators and the running backs coach in day to day activities and execution of the practice and game plans.

Professionally, Brown enjoyed a six year National Football League career, playing for four different organizations after being selected by the Carolina Panthers in the sixth round of the 2001 draft. Brown also suited up for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs.

Brown played four seasons collegiately at Syracuse, rushing for 1,031 yards in 2000 and finishing his career among the Orange's top-5 in career touchdowns. Brown earned his bachelor's degree from Syracuse in 2000 with a B.S. in psychology.

While at Syracuse, Dee was a part of teams that earned the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Achievement Award for having the highest graduation rate among Division I programs in the country.

He is also a graduate of Walden University with a M.S. in counseling/therapy. He was a trainer for the International Institute of Restorative Practices. Brown also completed the QPR Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Program.

With the addition of Brown, the Camels now have three former Carolina Panthers on staff, including head coach Mike Minter and defensive backs coach Reggie Howard. Newly announced quarterbacks coach Pat White also spent time in the NFL.

Heading into his third season on staff, Cuddington joined the CU sidelines prior to the 2020 season as an offensive graduate assistant, helping with the offensive side of the ball, primarily with the offensive line, also breaking down opponents.

During the 2021 campaign, the Kenly, N.C. native assisted with an offense that led the Big South in passing offense with a school record 261.6 yards per game (2,901 yards), ranking 22nd in the FCS, despite starting three different quarterbacks during the season.

Once a staple on the CU offensive line, Cuddington joined the coaching staff after a standout playing career with the Camels from 2015-19. Cuddington started his final 22 games for the Camels, mostly at left tackle, on the way to First Team All-Big South accolades as a senior in 2019.

Also a former Big South Presidential Honor Roll and Pioneer Football League Academic Honor Roll member, Cuddington graduated from Campbell in the spring of 2020 with a B.S. in sport management, and is currently working toward a masters in interdisciplinary studies, concentrating in exercise science.
