BUIES CREEK, N.C. – For the first time in 2022, the Camels will play in front of a home crowd Wednesday when Campbell hosts Hampton at 7:00 p.m.
After playing their first three Big South home contests in front of essential personnel only, fans will be welcomed back to Gore Arena. The game will also air on ESPN+ with
Chris Hemeyer and Jay Sonnhalter on the call.
Campbell University COVID-19 policy requires all individuals to wear face masks indoors. A clear bag policy is in effect for all games in Gore Arena.
The Camels (10-7, 3-3) are coming off a 73-72 win Saturday at North Carolina A&T.
Jordan Whitfield hit a corner three with 0.6 seconds remaining for the Camels, who made a season-high 15 triples.
Messiah Thompson (5-7 threes) scored a season-high 20 points, Cedric Henderson (4-7 triples) added 18 (including his 1,000th career point) and Whitfield 17 (5-10 threes) for CU, which shot 48.4% (15-31) beyond the arc, 52.8% overall. Campbell ended NC A&T's 29-game home court win streak against league foes.
Hampton (5-11, 1-4) is playing its third game in five days and coming off a 73-49 loss Monday vs, Longwood. Najee Garvin led HU with 15 points.
- Campbell stands 6-2 at home this year, 2-1 vs. Big South teams at Gore Arena. Hampton is 1-7 on the road (1-10 including neutral site games), 0-3 at league opponents.
- Campbell has held 14 of its 17 opponents below 70 points and ranks first in the Big South, 25th in the nation, in scoring defense (61.3).
- Four Camels rank among the Big South's top 30 scorers - Cedric Henderson, Jr. (12th, 12.5), Jordan Whitfield (19th, 11.9) Jesus Carralero (26th, 10.4), and Ricky Clemons (28th, 10.1).
- Hampton's Najee Garvin - a Nicholls State grad transfer - ranks third among Big South scoring leaders (15.6) and fifth in rebounding (6.1).
- Following Wednesday's game, the Camels host High Point Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
CAMPBELL-HAMPTON NOTES
- Hampton (0-3 vs CU at Gore Arena) has not won on Campbell's home floor since the Pirates joined the Big South.
- The Pirates roster includes seven players who started their careers at different four-year schools - Marquis Godwin (ODU), Najee Garvin (Nicholls State), Raymond Bethea, Jr. (Howard), Dajour Dickens (ODU), Pinky Wiley (Delaware State), DeAngelo Epps (College of Charleston), Mario Haskett, Jr. (Harvard).
- Campbell swept a pair of games at Hampton last season. On Feb. 18, Messiah Thompson scored a career-high 21 points in a 76-57 victory. The Camels hit 13-of-27 threes (.481) on the night and matched their season low with 6 turnovers, while finishing with a 40-27 edge on the boards. Cedric Henderson, Jr. added 14 points. One night later, Jordan Whitfield scored 14 of his 20 points in the final 15:59 and Campbell rallied to defeat Hampton 73-68. CU trailed by 12 with 9:34 to play but reeled off a 19-4 run and held the Pirates to 3-of-13 shooting the rest of the way. Cedric Henderson added 16 points, Joshua Lusane 12 (on 4-of-4 threes) and Messiah Thompson 10 for CU, which made 11-of-20 triples.
- Both Hampton and USC Upstate are fourth-year members of the Big South Conference. Hampton left the MEAC prior to the 2018-19 season, while USC Upstate was formerly a member of the Atlantic Sun.
- Prior to the 2018-19 season, the Camels and Pirates had met once during Hampton's Division I era (since '95-96) in men's basketball, a 63-62 Campbell win on Jan. 15, 1996, in Buies Creek at old Carter Gym.
- Campbell and Hampton met four times between 1971-72 and 1974-75 when both programs competed in the NAIA. The Pirates won both meetings in Hampton, while Campbell claimed both games at Carter Gym.
- Hampton was a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference from 1995-2018 and made six NCAA tournament appearances, most recently back-to-back trips to the "Big Dance" in 2015 and 2016. Hampton is one of seven 15 seeds to record a victory in the NCAA tournament. The Pirates knocked out 2nd-seeded Iowa State in the 2011 event.
- Hampton is one of three historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) that is not affiliated with the Mid-Eastern Athletic (MEAC) or Southwestern Athletic (SWAC) conference. Tennessee State in Nashville is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference. Former MEAC member North Carolina A&T joined the Big South in 2021.
- Head Coach Edward "Buck" Joyner, Jr., comes from a basketball coaching family. His father, Edward Joyner, Sr., was head coach at St. Paul's College, while his uncle, Steve Joyner, is head coach and athletic director at Johnson C. Smith University.
- Founded in 1868, Hampton University is situated near the mouth of Chesapeake Bay in the Hampton Roads region. Notable alumni include Booker T. Washington (1875), who founded Tuskegee University, former Good Morning America weatherman Spencer Christian, and NBA standout Rick Mahorn ('80), who played for the Washington Bullets, Detroit Pistons and New Jersey Nets.
