BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell, riding a nine match unbeaten streak, travels to Charleston Southern Wednesday. Kickoff from CSU Soccer Field is set for 3 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT: Four different players netted goals as Campbell dispatched Presbyterian 4-0 last Friday on Senior Night. Jackie Richards drilled a penalty kick in the 5th minute while Elyssa Nowowieski doubled the lead in the 12th. Amber Liston and Olivia Neal added second half goals while the Campbell defense limited the Blue Hose to six shots, earning the fifth shutout of the season.
SERIES HISTORY: Wednesday marks the 19th meeting between Campbell and Charleston Southern with the Camels leading the series 14-3-1. Campbell has the past six straight meetings. Last season the Camels earned a 2-1 victory over the Buccaneers featuring goals by Laney Peabody and Reagan Baiotto. CSU's last win in the series came in 2016, a 3-1 decision.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT: Charleston Southern enters Wednesday's match with a 5-6-2 overall record and a 3-1-1 mark in Big South play. The Bucs are currently riding a four-match unbeaten streak including three back-to-back-to-back shutout wins over USC Upstate, UNC Asheville and Presbyterian. Sophomore forward Jenea Knight leads the Bucs with six goals and four assists. Jose Gomez is the head coach of the Buccaneers, owning a 13-20-4 record across three seasons.
UNBEATEN STREAK TO NINE: Campbell improved its unbeaten streak (7-0-2) to nine games following a 4-0 win over Presbyterian last Friday.. The streak started following three-straight losses to a pair of teams that advanced to last season's NCAA Tournament (Clemson, NC State) and a Liberty team that reached the NCAA Tournament in the spring 2020-21 season. The Camels have had unbeaten streaks of five or more games in each of the past three seasons; 2021 - six games (twice), 2020-21 - eight games, 2019 - nine games. The longest unbeaten streak in program history is at 17 games coming in 2004.
BIG SOUTH DOMINANCE: The Camels have compiled a 28-6-4 record in Big South play since the 2019 season, outscoring conference foes 112-36 in that span.
POINT PRODUCERS: Eleven different players have recorded one point or more for Campbell through 11 matches this season. Jessica Donald (5 goals, four assists) and Jackie Richards (4g, 6a) lead with 14 points, followed by Elyssa Nowowieski (4g, 4a) with 12 points and Kaleigh Backlund (4g) with eight points.
SHARING IS CARING: Campbell ranks 26th nationally with 2.15 assists per game and 25th with 28 total assists. Nine different Camels have assisted on goals this season led by Jackie Richard (6) and Mary Tierney (5).
HOMEFIELD ADVANTAGE: Campbell is 24-4-4 in home games dating back to the 2019 season, outscoring opponents 90-27 in that span.
HEAD COACH JEFF GROSS (UMBC '93) is in his first season at Campbell and as a head coach. Gross spent the last eight seasons, including the last two as associate head coach, on the staff at UNC Greensboro. While at UNCG, Gross helped guide the Spartans to back-to-back Southern Conference championships and NCAA College Cup appearances in 2017 and 2018. Gross takes over a program that is coming off consecutive trips to the Big South Conference championship game as well as an appearance in the 2020-21 NCAA tournament.
$30K FOR 30 CAMPAIGN: Campbell University head coach Jeff Gross has announced the $30K for the 30th anniversary season campaign to benefit the Fighting Camels program. In recognition of the 30th anniversary of Campbell's first women's soccer season in 1992, the program is setting a fund-raising goal of $30,000 for a number of enhancements.
