BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Jefferson Amaya's 87th minute goal was the difference Wednesday as High Point defeated Campbell in a battle of the top two teams in the Big South standings at the Eakes Athletics Complex.
Amaya's first career strike came on a 30-yard direct kick and was just the second shot on target all night for the Panthers (5-3-4, 3-0-2).
Campbell (7-3-3, 3-1-1) dropped to second place in the league table after losing for the first time in six outings.
"I'm proud of our guys," said Campbell head coach
Dustin Fonder. "We had the right approach and the right effort. Soccer's a cruel game at times and we just came out on the wrong side of a one-nil score."
The Panthers went 62 minutes between shots and 85 between shots on target but held the league's leading offense – and 21st in the nation (2.33 goals per game) – scoreless and to just one shot on frame.
That one attempt on target came just before halftime when Camel freshman
Ethan Roberts ripped a right-footed effort that was headed inside the right post, but fifth-year senior keeper Holden Trent left his feet to deflect the ball away for what proved to be his only save in his fourth shutout of the season.
Campbell finished with a 10-4 advantage in shots, but only had two – both off target – in the final half. The Camels suffered their first home loss of the season and lost for just the second time in league regular season play in the last four years.
NOTES: The Camels stand 30-3-6 in their last 39 matches at the Eakes Complex, including a 3-1-2 mark in this season. Under 8th-year Coach

The only other time that a Big South team has defeated the Camels at the Eakes Complex in that span was High Point's 1-0 decision during the 2020-21 fall to spring season… In the eight years since head coach
Dustin Fonder moved to Buies Creek from High Point, Campbell stands 5-3-3 against the Panthers… Campbell travels to Radford Saturday for a 4 p.m. kickoff on ESPN+.
