Camels top Spartans in four sets

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Campbell's middle blockers had their way at the net to help the Camels to their seventh win in a row Friday night at USC Upstate. The win takes Campbell to 11-8, 7-0 in Big South play to remain atop the standings.

Aley Clent notched a new freshman-season high with 12 kills with zero errors for a .600 hitting mark on the night. Fellow middle blocker Melody Paige also tallied 12 kills on .429 hitting to continue her stellar senior season. The two combined for 13 total blocks on the night as well, each coming away with two solo.

Campbell jumped out to an early lead with a 25-19 opening set. Melody Paige had a pair of solo blocks to help hold the Spartans to hitting .121 in the opening frame. Ananda Pattersono was effective early with five kills in the first.

It was tougher sledding in the second set for the Camels who trailed most of the way before eventually falling 26-24.  Campbell had its opportunities with the set tied late, but a pair of costly service errors gave USC Upstate the set. Service errors plagued the Camels all night, tying a season high with 15 on the evening.

The Camels got back on track in the third with a 25-15 set. After being tied at 8-8, the Camels ran away with the largest set win of the night. The defense stepped up in the third set to hold the Spartans to -.027 on only eight kills.

Campbell finished things off the way it started with another 25-19 set win in the fourth.  Lailah Green had her best set of the night in the fourth with five kills to help cap the win. Campbell's attack hit .308 as a team in the final frame.

Along with Paige and Patterson, Patterson joined them in double figures with 10. Claranne Fechter, fresh of her Libero of the Week nod, posted a match-high 17. Emily Mitter collected 27 assists on the night to lead all setters.

Campbell returns to action tomorrow at 2 p.m. at UNC Asheville. The match will once again be streamed on ESPN+.
