Camels defeat Lancers 5-1

Campbell moves to top of Big South table

FARMVILLE, VA. – Campbell followed its highest-scoring match of the season with its most productive half and went on to defeat Longwood 5-1 Wednesday night at the Longwood Athletics Complex.

Coming off a 5-0 victory over Winthrop, the Camels (6-2-3, 2-0-1) scored four times in the opening period and extended their unbeaten streak to four (3-0-1).

Gerard Broussard, Jalen James, Diego Konincks and Jamie Lamb hit the nets in the opening 45 as Campbell scored on four of its six shots on target and hit the crossbar twice before the break.  Daniel Hernandez added his third goal of the year in the 81st minute.

Kyoji Hata had two assists for Campbell, which finished with a 24-9 edge in shots, 14-3 in shots on target and took 10 corner kicks to five for the Lancers (1-5-3, 0-1-0).

For the second-straight contest, Campbell produced five different goal scorers in a league win and moved to the top of the league table alongside High Point with seven points.

In the 10th minute, Kyoji Hata drove a long diagonal pass down the right flank to Adrien Gameiro, who struck a low cross that Broussard met in stride for his third goal of the season.

After 25 minutes, Daniel Hernandez controlled a loose ball in the Longwood end and slid a pass to James, who scored on a low shot inside the right post for his league-leading sixth strike of the year.

Two set pieces yielded goals just 2:17 apart late in the half.  In the 38th minute, Tyler Young sent a free kick into the area that was knocked down to Konincks, whose first shot hit the crossbar, but the senior calmly slotted home the rebound for his second goal in as many games, while Longwood players appealed for an offside call.

Hata again played provider at the 40:15 mark when Lamb nodded in his free kick for the Camels' fourth goal of the period.  The margin might have been five, but Broussard headed off the bar in the second minute and Camel keeper Edu Rodriguez made a 30th minute save on Ethan Stevenson's left-footed effort.

Longwood drew a goal back in the 48th minute when Renan Santos drove a low shot from about 25 yards inside the right post.  However, the Lancers went down a man when Marco Magnoli was shown red for a hard foul on Moses Mensah just after the ensuing kickoff.

CU nearly went back in front by four two times around 56 minutes when James hit the crossbar, then moments later, with the keeper out of position, Lopes' shot was cleared by Lancers back Fabio Podmelle.

In the 81st minute, Hernandez again stole a pass on the Longwood end and launched a left-footed shot inside the left post for his third goal of the year.
