Camels top HPU, take over top of Big South

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell claimed the top spot in the Big South standings with a five-set win over previously unbeaten High Point Saturday afternoon at Gore Arena. Campbell has now won its last three meetings with HPU, and 19 of its last 21 at home.

Campbell briefly claimed the top of the Big South standings with a home win over HPU last season, but was knocked off by USC Upstate in the following match. The Camels will look to avoid a repeat of that with USC Upstate next on the schedule.

A strong Campbell serving attack that resulted in eight aces put pressure on the Panthers to keep them out of system and help force 28 attack errors, a season-high. Campbell's front line that ranks 15th nationally in blocks, collected 13 more on the afternoon.

Campbell fell behind 9-1 in the first set, but as the day would have it, fought back to even the score at 16-16. The comeback effort fell short in the fame as HPU took a 1-0 advantage at 25-23.

The Camels put together the largest set win of the match in the second at 25-15. The Camels hit .314 in the frame while holding the Panthers to .135. Chloe Cook led the efforts in the second set with five kills and an ace.

Campbell took the lead with a narrow 25-23 third set. The set was a defensive battle with neither team hitting above .100 and a handful of long rallies making for an entertaining frame. With the match tied at 20-20, two HPU service errors and two kills from Melody Paige helped push the Camels to a 2-1 lead.

Both teams hit below .100 again in the fourth set as High Point evened the score with a 25-19 set. HPU jumped ahead 9-5 and controlled the set the rest of the way.

Campbell's attack found a rhythm in a big way, hitting .583 in the fifth set to close out the match 15-13. Campbell had just seven kills on 12 attacks but relied on seven errors from the Panthers to help reach the finish line. Melody Paige capped the day with her team-high 13th kill for the final point.

Along with Paige's 13 kills, Cook notched 11 and Ananda Patterson, Lailah Green and Gwen Wolkow all had nine. Emily Mitter dished out a team-high 25 assists and Claranne Fechter posted a match-high 28 digs. Paige had another huge day up front with eight blocks.

Campbell is on the road for both of next week's matches. The first is set for Friday at 6 p.m. against USC Upstate before heading to the mountains to face UNC Asheville Saturday at 2 p.m.
