BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. –
Tyler Young scored twice, and Campbell won its second-straight Big South regular season title after a 3-1 victory over Gardner-Webb Wednesday at Greene-Harbison Stadium.
The top-seeded Fighting Camels (10-3-5, 6-1-1), who claimed the regular season crown for the third time in four years, will host the fourth-seeded team in the Big South semifinal round Sunday. The highest remaining seed will host the Big South final on Saturday, Nov. 12 with the league's automatic bid in the NCAA College Cup at stake.
The Camels scored just 3:27 into the game, led 2-0 at the break, and finished three of their four shots on target.
In the third minute, Kyoji Hata played a ball down the right flank that Daniel Osei-Tutu ran down at the goal line.
Jalen James rose for a free header off Osei-Tutu's cross to put the Camels in front with his league-leading eighth goal of the year.
After 16 minutes, Gardner-Webb's Omar Boudaka fouled Young in the area. Young then scored from the penalty spot to double the advantage.
Young added his second goal of the day and fourth of the season with just 3:27 remaining on a counterattack. Adrien Gameiro dribbled into the GWU third and fed Kemy Amiche, who slid the ball on to Young. The 2021 Big South offensive player of the year then slid the ball by Bulldog keeper Javier Ramirez.
GWU pulled one back in the 88th minute when a cross by Giampaolo Nardo went off CU keeper
Edu Rodriguez' hands and into the net.
Despite being outshot (17-7) for just the second time this year, the Camels were clinical in their finishing and played more than 86 minutes with the lead. Gardner-Webb (7-5-4, 2-2-4) managed to only get three of its 17 attempts on frame.
