Camels host Dolphins on Thanksgiving Eve

4 PM tip-off Wednesday at Gore Arena

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After winning 2 of 3 games over the weekend at the Appalachian State multi-team event, Campbell (3-2) hosts Jacksonville (2-1) Wednesday in a 4:00 p.m. tip on ESPN+.
 
The Camels defeated host Appalachian State 63-58 Friday before dropping a 70-69 loss to Southeastern Louisiana Saturday.  CU then defeated Kennesaw State 85-61 Sunday.
 
On Sunday, Campbell hit season highs for points in a half (54) and game (85), overall (.574) and 3-point (.615) field goal percentage as well as free throw accuracy (23-of-28 – .821).  Juan Reyna came off the bench to score a career-high 27 points, while Anthony Dell'Orso (18) and Jesus Carralero (16) hit season highs.
 
Jacksonville opened the year with a 71-44 loss at No. 7 Duke, then defeated non-D1 members Johnson (85-34) and Vorhees (91-61).  Mike Marsh (14.7) leads the Dolphins in scoring.
 
  • The 2022-23 Campbell roster includes eight newcomers, several of which have already made impacts on the squad.
  • Forward Jay Pal, a grad transfer from Jacksonville State with two years of eligibility remaining, has started all 5 games and leads the team in rebounds (6.2) and blocks (8), while averaging 8 points.
  • Guard Devon Dunn, a grad transfer from Fairleigh Dickinson with two years of eligibility remaining, ranks fourth on the team in scoring (9.2) and led CU with 18 points in its win over Appalachian State.
  • Freshman guard Anthony Dell'Orso is third on the team in scoring (9.8) and is shooting 85% from the line while averaging 18.9 minutes off the bench. He scored a season-high 18 points in the win over Kennesaw State.
  • Sophomore guard Juan Reyna, a transfer from Alabama State, came off the bench to score a career-high 27 points in CU's 85-61 win over Kennesaw State.  He made 7-of-10 shots, including 4-of-7 threes, and all nine of his free throws to lift his season scoring average to 6.8.
  • Following Wednesday's game, the Camels host Stetson Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
 
CAMPBELL-JACKSONVILLE NOTES
  • Since returning to the Big South Conference in 2011-12, Campbell is 8-1 vs. ASUN members and has won 8-straight outings.
  • The Dolphins are under the direction of second-year head coach Jordan Mincy, who joined the program after spending 2015-21 as assistant coach at Florida.
  • After posting a 21-10 overall record and 11-5 league mark a year ago, Jacksonville was picked second in the ASUN preseason poll.  Kevion Nolan was named to the ASUN preseason all-conference team.
  • Campbell and Jacksonville are meeting for the 29th time in men's basketball. CU stands 2-2 all-time against the Dolphins at Gore Arena, which opened in 2008-09.
  • On Dec. 8, 2020 at Jacksonville, Cedric Henderson, Jr. scored a career-high 26 points and Campbell held off a Jacksonville rally to earn an 80-78 win at Swisher Gym. Jordan Whitfield scored 17 points, Joshua Lusane added a career-high 15 and Gediminas Mokšeckas contributed 11 off the bench for the Camels, who led by as many as 21.
  • Last season's game between the Dolphins and Camels was canceled due to Covid-19 precautions.
  • JU red-shirt senior Bryce Workman is the son of 10-year NBA veteran Haywoode Workman.
  • Campbell and Jacksonville competed as members of the Pioneer Football League from 2008-17 when the Camels moved up to FCS scholarship football level in the Big South Conference.  JU dropped its football program after the 2019 season.
  • Jacksonville's Senior Associate A.D. for Internal Affairs Justin Wilkins is a Campbell grad, who served as Director of Compliance at his alma mater before joining the JU staff in 2015.
  • JU alumni include Naismith Hall of Fame member Artis Gilmore, who led the Dolphins to an NCAA runner-up finish in 1970 and Dee Brown, who won the 1991 NBA Slam Dunk title as a member of the Boston Celtics.  In addition, PGA Tour golfer Russell Knox and 3-time MLB all-star infielder Daniel Murphy attended Jacksonville.  Also, Leonard Skinner, a high school gym teacher and basketball coach is known in popular culture as the eponym of the rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd; Skinner was the band members' teacher.
