BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell fell to Radford in five sets Saturday at Gore Arena. The loss drops Campbell in a tie for first place in the Big South with High Point, though Campbell still holds the tiebreaker with the head-to-head advantage.
Campbell falls to 16-10, 12-2 on the season while Radford advances to improves to 10-16 6-8 in the league.
The Camels managed to out-hit the Highlanders on the afternoon, but was plagued by 14 service errors that helped Radford capture a few sets. Campbell dropped the first set by four points, but committed five service errors in the frame.
Four Camels logged double-figure kills, led by
Melody Paige with 17 and
Ananda Patterson with 14.
Lailah Green and Gwen Wolkow added 11 each.
Emily Mitter notched a career-high 36 assists alongside Claranne Fechter tallying a career-high 37 digs. Wolkow had a double-double with a career-high 19 digs as well, while Sciacca and Green each logged double-doubles as well.
Tied at 1-1, the match hung in the balance in a dramatic third set that Radford ultimately took 32-30, the highest scoring set of the season for Campbell. Campbell led by as many as five, and had four set points leading 24-20 before Radford drew even. The teams exchanged points for a while before a solo block capped the set for the Highlanders.
Radford looked to be on the brink of taking the match in four sets, leading the fourth 15-10 before Campbell rallied back for a close 25-23 win.
For the second straight match it took more than 15 points to decide the fifth set, this time going the way of the opponent. Neither side ever led by more two in the final frame that was once again capped by a Highlander block, one of their 11 on the night.
Campbell returns to action next Friday at home against UNC Asheville. That match is set for 6 p.m.
