BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Coming off a season-opening win, Campbell heads to NC State Friday for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off at PNC Arena on ACC Network Extra.
The Camels (1-0) opened with a 79-62 Monday over Division II St. Augustine's. Preseason All-Big South choice
Ricky Clemons and Jay Pal (8 rebounds, 4 blocks) led CU with 13 points each, while freshman Anthony Dell'Orso added 11 for CU, which finished with a 16-5 edge in second-chance points. Devon Dunn added nine points on 3-of-6 shooting from 3-point range for the Camels, who made 28-of-38 free throws.
Preseason All-ACC member Terquavion Smith led NC State (1-0) with 28 points and Jarkel Joiner added 18 for the Wolfpack, who rolled to a 99-50 season-opening victory Monday against Austin Peay. State shot 61.5 percent from the field and finished with a 26-5 edge in points off turnovers.
NOTES:
- Friday's game is the first of four straight away from home for the Camels, who will play next week in a multi-team event at Appalachian State.
- NC State is in the midst of a four-game season-opening home stretch before meeting Kansas Nov. 23 in the Battle 4 Atlantis at Paradise Island, Bahamas.
- Friday's contest marks the fourth time in the last five seasons that the Camels have squared off against an ACC member. Last year, CU fell 67-56 at No. 9 Duke. On Dec. 19, 2020, NC State claimed a 69-50 win at PNC Arena. Miami edged the Camels 73-62 on Dec. 29, 2018.
- The Camels own a 1-33 all-time record vs. current ACC members with the lone victory coming at NC State on Dec. 4, 1993, in a 72-69 OT decision at Reynolds Coliseum. In their most recent game against an ACC member, the Camels fell at No. 9 Duke 67-56 on Nov. 13, 2021.
- The Wolfpack dealt the Camels an 81-66 loss on Nov. 16, 2013, in Kevin McGeehan's third game as head coach at Campbell. McGeehan's teams are 0-4 all-time vs. ACC members.
- Campbell is the lone current Big South Conference member to defeat the Wolfpack in men's basketball. NC State stands 61-1 all-time vs the present Big South configuration: 11-1 vs. Campbell, 9-0 vs. Charleston Southern, 1-0 vs. Gardner-Webb, 7-0 vs. High Point, 0-0 vs. Longwood, 19-0 vs. UNC Asheville, 2-0 vs. Presbyterian, 2-0 vs. Radford, 2-0 vs. USC Upstate and 9-0 vs. Winthrop.
- NC State enters Friday's game with a 37-2 record against non-conference opponents in regular season home games under head coach Kevin Keatts.
- Keatts' UNC Wilmington teams went 2-1 vs. the Camels during his 3-year stint with the Seahawks. Campbell defeated UNCW 69-63 on Dec. 23, 2014, in Keatts' first season, while the Seahawks downed the Camels the next two years.
- Campbell faced NC State four times in its first five seasons as a Division I member, making the 30-mile drive from its Buies Creek campus to Reynolds Coliseum in four-straight years from 1978-81. Friday's game will the just the fifth between CU and its closest ACC member in the 2000s.
- In the last meeting between the teams, Jericole Hellems scored 19 points and NC State used a 19-1 run midway through the second half to claim a 69-50 win over Campbell on Dec. 19, 2020, at PNC Arena. Cedric Henderson, Jr. and Gediminas Mokseckas led Campbell with 10 points each, while Joshua Lusane added nine. Lusane's dunk and three capped an 11-4 Camel surge and provided CU with its largest lead (22-15) with 7:13 to play in the opening period. However, the Wolfpack outscored the visitors 15-6 to close the period and took a 30-28 lead into the break.
- In addition to Mokseckas and Lusane, three other current Camels also appeared in the last Campbell contest against NC State. Ricky Clemons joined Lusane in the starting lineup and scored 7 points in 24 minutes, while Jesus Carralero (4 points in 20 minutes) and Laurynas Vaistaras (2 minutes) came off the bench for CU. None of the nine Wolfpack players who competed against the Camels two seasons ago remain on the NC State roster.
- The Camels will see a familiar face Friday in NC State grad transfer and 2022 Big South player of the year D.J. Burns. Two years ago, Burns scored 23 points to lead Winthrop to the league tournament title over the Camels.
- Following Friday's game, the Camels play Nov. 18 at Appalachian State. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
