Camels fall 82-72 at PC in Big South opener

CLINTON, S.C. – Crosby James scored a season-high 23 points to lead Presbyterian to an 82-72 win over Campbell Thursday at the Templeton Center in the Big South Conference opener for both teams.

Ricky Clemons led Campbell (5-8, 0-1) with 18 points, while Jay Pal added a career-high 17 for the Camels, who dropped their third-straight game.  Joshua Lusane chipped in 11 points and Anthony Dell'Orso contributed 8, plus 8 rebounds for CU, which shot 59 percent in the second half, but could not overcome an 11-point deficit at the break.

Pal made 5-of-7 from the floor and 7-of-8 from the line before fouling out with 3:06 to play.  Clemons hit 7-of-9 shot shots for the Camels, who connected on 26-of-57 from the floor overall (.456) but made just 2-of-15 beyond the arc.

Jalen Forrest (16), Owen McCormack (14) and Marquis Barnett (11) also scored in double digits for the Blue Hose (5-9, 1-0), who stretched their win streak to three games.  PC shot 48 percent on the night (29-of-60), 57 percent (16-28) in the second half, made 8-of-20 threes and 16-of-20 from the stripe.

Pal's follow shot cut PC's 11-point halftime lead to just 49-44 with 13:39 to go, but the Blue Hose again stretched the advantage to double digits.  Clemons scored at the rim with 35 seconds left to trim the gap to 78-72, but PC went 4-of-4 from the stripe in the final 25 seconds to seal the win.

PC took a 37-26 halftime lead, thanks in part to 12 points off six Campbell turnovers.  McCormack scored 10 first-half points for the Blue Hose, who shot 41 percent, but made 5-of-14 threes.

With Pal and Dell'Orso saddled with foul trouble, Campbell shot just 30 percent (10-of-30) before the break, 1-of-7 from 3-point distance.

The Camels host defending Big South champ Longwood on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
