Men's Hoops hosts Longwood Saturday afternoon

Kids in the Creek promotion includes free ice cream and more

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell hosts defending Big South Conference champ Longwood Saturday in a 2:00 p.m. tip-off at Gore Arena.

Saturday's "Kids in the Creek" promotion includes a Camel Kids Zone with free ice cream, face painting, balloon artists, a poster station and more.
 
The Camels (5-8, 0-1) are coming off an 82-72 loss Thursday in their league opener at Presbyterian.  Ricky Clemons scored 18 points and Jay Pal added a career-high 17 for the Camels, who shot 59 percent in the second half, but could not overcome an 11-point deficit at the break.
 
Longwood (9-5, 1-0) started Big South play with an 87-73 win Thursday against High Point.  Isaiah Wilkins led five Lancers in double figures with 25 points, including 5-of-5 from 3-point distance, and Longwood closed the game on an 11-0 run.
 
NOTES:
  • Campbell stands 3-2 at home this year, while Longwood is 3-4 away from Willett Hall.
  • Longwood leads the all-time series against the Camels by a 14-11 margin and has won 4 of the last 5 meetings.  Campbell has won 5 of 8 meetings all-time at Gore Arena.
  • Longwood swept the season series a year ago, claiming a 72-64 decision at Farmville and a 60-55 victory at Buies Creek.
  • Fifth-year senior Ricky Clemons leads the Camels - and ranks 12th in the Big South Conference - with a 13.0 scoring average.  Anthony Dell'Orso (11.3) is the league's 2nd-leading freshman scorer, while Joshua Lusane contributes 11.4 per outing.
  • Since moving into the starting lineup 8 games ago, senior center Joshua Lusane is averaging 14.1 points, while shooting 49 percent from the floor and chipping in 3.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists per outing.  He has scored in double figures in 6 of the last 7 games.
  • Campbell ranks 2nd among Big South leaders in team field goal percentage (.474), 1st in steals (7.69) and 4th in scoring defense (68.6).
  • Longwood's starting lineup includes three graduate students and two juniors.  Guard Isaiah Wilkins leads a balanced Lancers offense at 13.3 points per game - 11th in the Big South.  As a team, Longwood leads all Big South schools in scoring margin (+10.6), assist-turnover ratio (1.2) and assists (14.3), while ranking 2nd in scoring (79.6), 3-point FG percentage (.379), 3s per game (8.4), free throw percentage (.747), rebounding margin (+4.1) and turnover margin (+2.9).
  • After sweeping last year's Big South regular season and tournament titles, the Lancers were chosen as the '22-23 league preseason favorites, collecting 16 of a possible 20 first-place votes.
  • Isaiah Wilkins (1st team) and DeShaun Wade (2nd team) were named to the preseason all-conference squad.
  • Four of Longwood's starters - Isaiah Wilkins (Virginia Tech/Wake Forest), DeShaun Wade (East Carolina), Zac Watson (UC Riverside), Walyn Napper (Southern Miss) - and two other Lancers - DA Houston (College of Charleston) and Michael Christmas (James Madison) - began their careers at other Division I schools.
  • The late Jerome Kersey, a 17-year (1984-2001) NBA veteran, was a two-time Division II All-American at Longwood from 1980-84.  He made two trips to the NBA finals with the Portland Trail Blazers (1990, 1992) and won an NBA title as a member of the 1999 San Antonio Spurs.
  • Other notable Longwood alumni include 12-year MLB veteran Michael Tucker ('93), 18-year LPGA tour member Tina Barrett ('88), singer/songwriter Jason Mraz and Eva Mae Fleming Scott ('47), the first woman elected to the Virginia senate.
  • Longwood was founded in 1839 as the Farmville Female Seminary Association, later became Longwood College (1949-2002) and gained university status in 2002.  The school first admitted male students in 1968 and became fully coeducational in 1976.
  • Following Saturday's game, the Camels host Gardner-Webb Wednesday (Jan. 4) in a 7 p.m. tip-off.
