JACKSONVILLE, FLA. - Campbell opened its 2022 campaign at River City Leadoff, splitting games against Florida A&M and North Florida on Friday at the UNF Softball Complex.
Game One - Campbell defeats Florida A&M, 4-0
The Camels earned their first season opening victory since 2018 after defeating Florida A&M 4-2.
In the first inning Campbell put two runners on as Claudia Ware reached on an error and Alyssa Henault singled to the pitcher. Kayla Fredendall drove in the first run of the day on a groundout to second while a second fielding error by Florida A&M brought another runner across the plate.
Florida A&M responded in the second as two walks and a hit loaded the bases but failed to score as a pop-up ended the inning.
CU tagged on another run in the top of the fifth on a triple from Ware down the right field line. In the sixth inning Zaria Dunlap beat out a play at the plate after a wild pitch.
The Rattlers best chance on the day came in bottom of the fifth as Jania Davis reached on an infield hit. Davis stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt but failed to score as the next batter flied out to left field.
Georgeanna Barefoot picked up the win after pitching a complete game, allowing three hits and striking out six batters on the day.
Game Two - North Florida defeats Campbell, 4-2
Campbell struck first in the third inning as Henault connected on a hit up the middle of the field to score a run. North Florida responded by scoring three runs in the bottom half of the inning and in the fourth.
Ware hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth to cut the deficit to one but a solo homer by the Ospreys in the bottom half of the inning ended Campbell's comeback chances.
Isabella Smith gave up three earned runs but struck out five batters in six innings of work.Â
