HAMPTON, VA. – Russell Dean's pull up jumper with 1.3 seconds to play lifted Hampton to a 68-66 Big South Conference win Wednesday night over Campbell at the HU Convocation Center.
Campbell (15-11, 8-7) rallied from an eight-point deficit with 1:46 to go to tie the game on
Cedric Henderson, Jr.'s free throw with 14.5 seconds to play.
The Pirates (9-17, 5-10) advanced the ball to the front court and called time out to set up the winning play. Dean took the inbound pass, dribbled diagonally to the left corner of the free throw line, then swished a fall away jumper for the winning points.
Hampton missed 4-of-8 free throws in the last 56 seconds to allow the Camels to draw even. Henderson's layup with 29 seconds pulled CU within 66-63, then
Joshua Lusane stole the ball from Pinky Wiley and laid it in to cut the lead to one with 26 seconds to play.
Wiley turned the ball over again with 24 seconds to go, and the Camels had the ball with the chance to take the lead. Henderson was fouled on a back door cut with 14.5 seconds left and hit the second of two free throws before Dean's game winner.
Marquis Godwin lead Hampton with 23 points, including 5-of-7 threes. Dean finished with 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while Najee Garvin and Rio Haskett added 10 points each for the Pirates, who shot 46 percent (24-52) from the floor, but made just 14-of-27 free throws (.519).
Henderson led Campbell with 23 points – his third-straight 20-plus point outing – and
Ricky Clemons tied his season high with 18 points on 6-of-10 from the field.
Austin McCullough matched his career high with eight rebounds for the Camels, who finished with a 37-34 advantage on the glass.
Campbell shot 38.7 percent (24-62) on the night, made 7-of-25 (.280) threes and 11-of-18 from the line (.611).
After shooting 52 percent in the opening half, Hampton led 37-29 at the break, thanks to 14 first-half points on Godwin, who hit 4 of his first 5 triples.
The Camels close the regular season at home Saturday vs. Longwood (4:30). The Big South Championship runs Mar. 2-6 at Bojangles' Arena in Charlotte.
