DAVIDSON, N.C. – Gianna New scored five goals, including two in the fourth quarter, to help Davidson hold off visiting Campbell 16-13 Wednesday night at Richardson Stadium.
The Wildcats move to 3-0 on the season, while CU falls to 1-1.
Trailing 14-9 at the 14:04 mark in the fourth, Campbell answered with three straight goals in 2:14 from
Mackenzie Kolesar,
Julianna Sanchez and
Megan Matthews, making it a two score game with 10:46 on the clock. New, however, netted two more for the Wildcats, the second with 1:50 to play.
Davidson held CU off the board from 10:46 until Sanchez' second goal of the night with 25 seconds remaining.
New added an assist, while Grace Fahey scored four times with an assist. Erin Cooke and Julianne Carey also added five points on four assists and a goal each. Carey tacked on 11 draw controls and 10 ground balls in the win, while Emily Weld posted three points on two goals and an assist. Amanda Monahan collected eight saves for the Wildcats.
Sam Bischoff and Matthews led Campbell with four points on three goals and an assist apiece, while
Ally Heath scored three goals with four ground balls. In addition to her two goals, Sanchez added three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Emma Strickland also collected 10 saves with a team-high five ground balls.
Next up for the Camels will be a trip to Elon on March 2. Campbell will make its home debut on March 19, taking on William & Mary after playing its first five contests on the road.
