BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell pitchers combined to win a pair of one-hit shutouts Friday in the opening day of the Camel Stampede at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.
Georgeanna Barefoot and
Isabella Smith each only allowed a lone single Friday. The Camels defeated Howard 2-0 in their first game and Kent State 1-0 in the nightcap.
In the opener, Barefoot (3-2) tossed a one-hit shutout of Howard. The redshirt sophomore righthander from Raleigh carried a no-hitter through four and 2/3 innings before Xzarria Simmons singled.
The Camels gave Barefoot all the run support she needed in the second when
Claudia Ware singled, stole second, moved to third on
Sterling Hairston's single and scored on
Alexa Pagano's bunt hit. Hairston also stole second and later scored on an error for a 2-0 Camel lead.
Barefoot did not walk a batter, struck out two and faced only one batter over the minimum. Analise De La Roca (1-2) was the tough-luck loser for Howard. She scattered five singles over six innings, allowed just one earned run with one walk and four strikeouts.
In the nightcap, the Camels (5-5) spoiled a no-hit bid by Andrea Scali when Pagano led off the sixth with a bunt single. She moved to second on Ware's sac bunt, stole third, and scored on
Samantha Fontaine's sacrifice fly.
Smith (2-3), who allowed only a single by Brooklyn Whitt in the fourth, set down the Golden Flashes (3-4) in order in the ninth. She walked only one batter and struck out nine. Scali (0-1) allowed just one hit, walked fourth and struck out eight.
