BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell (1-6) was swept in a series for the first time since 2019 as Maryland took both legs of Saturday's doubleheader. The Terrapins (7-0) topped the Camels 3-1 in the first game of the day and 9-2 in the series finale.
Campbell had its chances but ultimately left 19 runners on base throughout the day while only scoring a combined three runs.
The Maryland pitching staff was solid in both games as both starters, Ryan Ramsey and Jason Savacool, each went seven innings and combined to allow just eight hits and three runs. The bullpen picked up where the starters left off, as four arms combined for four scoreless innings allowing just one hit.
Game One Recap
Campbell struggled again to cash in on offense in game one of the doubleheader, leaving nine on base and at critical times.
The game came down to the ninth inning where Campbell loaded the bases with two outs after two HBPs and a walk with
Bryce Arnold, the leadoff hitter, coming to the plate. Arnold flew out to end the game with the potential tying and winning runs left on base.
Arnold was part of another key play in the 8th. The sophomore lifted one off the top of the wall in left. Amid confusion if it had left the yard, Arnold was tagged out between bases. Rather than cutting into the 3-1 Maryland lead with one swing, Campbell had one out and nobody on.
Campbell had an opportunity to get on the board first in the opening frame, but with two on and one out, a hard-hit grounder from Belbin went right at the shortstop shifted up the middle and resulted in an inning-ending double play.
Campbell's lone run of the ballgame came in the second on a
Logan Jordan sac fly.
Maryland got one in the second, another in the third and another in sixth to slowly build that 3-1 lead.
Cade Kuehler started on the mound and went 5.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 Ks. He was relieved by
Ty Cummings who turned in a strong relief outing, finishing the final 3.1 innings while allowing just one hit, no runs, and struck out three.
Dalen Thompson had a solid game at the dish, reaching three times with a double, single and walk.
Game Two Recap
George Ferguson got his first start on the bump and allowed just one early run in three innings of work.
Trailing by a run,
Lawson Harrill evened the score in the third with a solo blast to left-center field, his first of the season.
But the tie game did not last long, as Maryland quickly took control of the game with a four-run fourth inning that had four hits and a Camel error. After adding two more in the fifth, a six-run lead was plenty for the Maryland pitching staff.
Campbell scored its only other run in the seventh on an RBI single from Halstead, but would still strand two in the frame unable to pull any closer en route to a 9-2 final.
Four different players accounted for all four hits. Neto was hitless, but reached three times with a pair of walks and a HBP, and Denning reached twice with a hit and walk.
