CU defeats HPU in OT; claims regular season title

Camels outlast Panthers 60-53 for 2nd crown in 3 seasons

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – In her final home game, Taya Bolden scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Campbell to a 60-53 win in overtime over High Point Saturday at Gore Arena.

Campbell (21-6, 15-3) claimed its second Big South Conference regular season title in three years by holding the Panthers (16-13, 13-5) 0-of-4 from the field in the overtime period.  Coach Ronny Fisher's squad secured at least a berth in the Women's NIT.

The Camels earned the top seed in next week's Big South Championship at Bojangles' Arena in Charlotte and will face either the eighth or ninth seed in Thursday's 12 noon quarterfinal.   The winner of the Big South Championship will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

High Point, which had won 10 of its last 11 games, trailed 49-40 after Bolden made two free throws with 3:38 remaining in regulation. However, the Panthers closed the game on a 10-1 run and tied the score at 50 on Cydney Johnson's drive to the bucket with 4.4 seconds to play.

After HPU took a 52-50 lead on Jaden Wrightsell's foul shots with 3:26 remaining, the Camels pulled away.

Luana Serranho's drive to the bucket gave CU the lead for good with 1:33 to go.  Bolden scored in the paint, then Brittany Staves knocked down a three for a 59-53 advantage with 25 seconds remaining.

Serranho finished with 12 points and four assists to compliment Bolden's 40th career double-double (16th this season).  Svenia Nurenberg and Faith Price added nine points apiece for the Camels, who shot 37.5 percent, but made 10-of-21 (.476) threes and hit 14-of-16 (.875) from the line.

Nakyah Terrell led High Point with 20 points off the bench.  Jenson Edwards added 14 points and a team-high 7 rebounds for the Panthers, who shot 38 percent (21-55) from the floor, but finished with an 18-3 edge in points off turnovers.

The game marked the final home game for a quartet of Camel seniors – Bolden, Serranho, Tatyana Carver and Micaila Coleman.
