Camels head to Upstate Saturday

CU has won 5 of its last 7

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Coming off just its second loss in the last seven games, Campbell (12-8, 5-4) travels Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. tip-off at South Division leader USC Upstate (10-11, 7-2) on ESPN+.

In a game full of runs, Presbyterian defeated the Camels 64-58 Wednesday at Clinton, S.C.  Cedric Henderson, Jr. led CU with 21 points and 7 rebounds, while Ricky Clemons added 15 points.  However, CU could not overcome a cold shooting (30%) second half.

Behind a career-high 26 points from Bryson Mozone, USC Upstate won its fifth-straight road game in Big South play in an 85-78 decision Wednesday at Hampton.  Jordan Gainey added 18 points for the Spartans, who made 30-of-34 free throws.
  • Campbell is 3-6 on the road this season, 4-6 in all games away from Gore Arena, and is 1-3 at Big South teams.  The Camels won at NC A&T Jan. 22.
  • Upstate is 4-5 at home this season, 2-2 vs. Big South opponents at the Hodge Center.
  • Campbell stands 1-3 vs. Big South Conference South Division schools this season, including a 67-52 win over Charleston Southern and narrow losses to Asheville (54-60), Winthrop (72-74) and Presbyterian (58-64).  USC Upstate is 3-1 vs. North Division opponents - including back-to-back wins at NC A&T (84-64) and Hampton.
  • Campbell has held 16 of its 20 opponents below 70 points and ranks first in the Big South, 26th in the nation, in scoring defense (62.0).
  • Four Camels rank among the Big South's top 30 scorers - Cedric Henderson, Jr. (13th, 13.1), Jordan Whitfield (18th, 11.8), Ricky Clemons (28th, 10.0) and Jesus Carralero (29th, 9.9).
  • USC Upstate stands 15th in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (.386) and also leads the league in free throw accuracy (.738).  In Big South games only, the Spartans top the conference in 3-point % (.444) and 3s per game (9.7).
  • Upstate's Bryson Mozone ranks 5th in the league in scoring (15.0), while freshman Justin Gainey is 10th (13.6).  In conference games, Gainey averages 18.9 points, 2nd in the Big South.
  • Following Saturday's game, the Camels return home to host Gardner-Webb next Wednesday (Feb. 9).

CAMPBELL-USC UPSTATE NOTES
  • Campbell and Upstate were rivals in the Atlantic Sun Conference from 2007-11 before the Camels re-joined the Big South.
  • Since Upstate joined the Big South in 2018-19, Campbell stands 4-1 against the Spartans.  Campbell swept the season series in '20-21.
  • On Feb. 11, 2021, Jordan Whitfield made a leaner with 8.8 seconds to play and Campbell rallied to defeat USC Upstate 72-71 at Gore Arena.  Campbell, which trailed by seven (68-61) with 6:38 to play, held the Spartans scoreless over the final 4:12 and Upstate missed its last seven shots.  Messiah Thompson came off the bench to lead Campbell with a then career-high 19 points.  Cedric Henderson, Jr. added 16 points and Whitfield 14.
  • One night later, Henderson scored 22 points to lead Campbell to a 64-49 win.  Whitfield added 15 points plus a career-high eight rebounds and Thompson 10 points for the Camels, who pulled away with a 16-2 run late in the contest.
  • USC Upstate's G.B. Hodge Center has the smallest seating capacity (833) of all 353 NCAA Division I men's basketball members, just ahead of Charleston Southern's "Buc Dome" (881).
  • The most notable USC Upstate hoops alumni is Torrey Craig (2010-14), the former A-Sun player of the year, who is now with the Indiana Pacers.  Campbell's 2019 Big South player of the year Clemons joined the Houston Rockets in 2019-20 and now plays with the Maine Celtics in the NBA G-League.
  • Spartans head coach Dave Dickerson was an assistant to Ron Bradley in the Big South at Radford from 1992-96. Bradley, who was inducted into the Big South Hall of Fame in 2010, now serves as an assistant on Dickerson's Upstate staff. Dickerson was head coach at Tulane from 2005-10 and most recently served as associate head coach at Ohio State.
  • Founded in 1967, USC Spartanburg changed its named to USC Upstate in summer of 2004 and now enrolls approximately 6,000 students.  The Spartans moved to NCAA Division I in 2007.
  • USC Upstate's nickname "Spartans" is a tribute to the area's Revolutionary War history.  The Spartan Rifles were a local militia unit that played an important role in the Battle of Cowpens.  In 2004, Upstate shortened its nickname to Spartans, but still pays tribute to the unit.
