Camels sweep doubleheader at Charleston Southern

CU takes Big South opening series

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Campbell swept the series clinching doubleheader at Charleston Southern, Sunday at the CSU Softball Complex.

The Camels (13-7, 2-1) pulled away with a 5-4 (8 inn.) victory in the first game and a 3-1 win in the second to clinch their first conference series of the season over Charleston Southern (9-12, 1-2).

Delaney McDilda's single scored Tyra Parker as the winning run as the Camels held off Charleston Southern in extra innings. The Buccaneers struck first on a solo home run in the first inning, holding onto the lead until Sterling Hairston evened the score with a solo home run of her own in the fourth.

Charleston Southern retook the lead at 2-1 in the fifth until the Camels responded in the following inning. Tyra Parker and Alyssa Henault each drove in runs to give Campbell its first lead of the series. Claudia Ware blasted a home run to centerfield in the seventh inning for a 4-2 lead.

The Buccaneers responded in the bottom of the seventh, knotting the score at 4-4. McDilda drove in the winning run in the eighth while Isabella Smith forced the Buccaneers to go down in order to secure the win.

Five different Camels batted in runs while Samantha Fontaine and T. Parker each collected three hits. Smith (4-4) struck out seven batters in another complete game outing for the Camels.

Campbell 3, Charleston Southern 1
Savannah White's diving catch in the seventh with the bases loaded held off a furious Charleston Southern comeback as Campbell picked up the series clinching win.

McDilda and Henault drove in runs in the fourth inning while Cortez added another in the fifth.

The Buccaneers, who left 10 runners stranded, answered with a RBI double in the sixth inning. The Bucs loaded the bases in the seventh and nearly cut the deficit if not for a diving catch in left field by White to end the game.

Cortez and Henault had two hits each while Fontaine improved her hitting streak to seven games.

Georgeanna Barefoot (7-3) picked up the win in the circle, allowing one earned run and striking out five.
