LYNCHBURG, VA. - Liberty held off Campbell in a defensive battle for a 50-44 win Wednesday in the opening round of the WNIT at Liberty Arena.
Taya Bolden, in her final collegiate game, led Campbell (23-8) with 14 points and nine rebounds. Luana Serranho added 11 points while Faith Price added 10.
Bridgette Rettstatt led Liberty (28-4) with 16 points and 12 rebounds while Mya Berkman had 12 points and 10 boards.
Bolden scored 10 straight points for the Camels to start the second quarter, giving Campbell its largest lead of the game at 17-11 midway through the period before the Flames took a 25-20 lead into the half.
Liberty jumped out to its largest lead of the game at 34-23 out of halftime. Campbell responded by holding the Flames scoreless over the final 4:50 of the third quarter, trimming its deficit to one point entering the final period.
The Camels took its first lead since midway through the second quarter on a Luana Serranho jumper early in the fourth quarter. The Flames responded with a 10-0 run, emphasized by a Rettstatt three at 4:52 in the quarter. Campbell held the Flames without a field goal for the remainder of the game but couldn't complete the comeback, cutting its deficit to as few as five points in the final minutes.
Serranho scored her 1,000 career point on a free throw with 24 seconds left in the game. She joins Bolden and Shy Tuelle as players to break the 1,000 point barrier this season.
The Camels forced 21 Liberty turnovers, converting the miscues to 16 points.
Liberty held a 39-25 advantage on the boards and held Campbell to 33 percent (15-46) shooting from the field.
Campbell concludes the 2021-22 season tying the single-season record for wins. Head coach Ronny Fisher led the Camels to their second Big South regular season title in three seasons and the top-seed in the Big South Championship. The Camels finished as runner-up in the conference tournament for the third straight year.
