Game Recap: Baseball |

Campbell falls to West Virginia 6-3

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell dropped the second game of the series to West Virginia 6-3 Saturday at Jim Perry Stadium. Campbell collected more hits than the Mountaineers, but could not turn those baserunners into enough runs on the day.

The loss drops Campbell to 8-10 on the year, while West Virginia moves to 10-8.

While Campbell did collect more hits, Campbell pitchers surrendered six walks to Mountaineer hitters. WVU also stole six bases to keep runners in scoring position throughout the afternoon.

West Virginia jumped out to an early lead, getting two off Cade Kuehler in the first, and tacked on another in the second inning for an early 3-0 advantage.

Logan Jordan got a run back with a solo home run in the fifth, his second of the year to briefly cut into the lead. The Mountaineers would get that run back the following half inning, in addition to one more to go up 5-1 and provide Ben Hampton all the run support he would need.

Hampton had a solid day for the Mountaineers, lasting 7.1 innings allowing four hits and just two runs while striking out three over the course of 116 pitches. He, along with Chase Smith, induced 17 ground-ball outs on the day which proved beneficial on a windy day in Buies Creek.

Cade Kuehler was tagged with the loss for the Camels, tossing five innings and allowing three runs, two of them earned. Jonathan Beyemer worked three innings of relief and allowed two runs but did strike out the side in the eighth. Garrett Kangas worked a scoreless ninth for the Camels.

Drake Pierson and Jarrod Belbin both drove in runs for the Campbell offense. Belbin now has five RBI over the last three games. With two hits on the day, Pierson extended his reached-base streak to 12 games, the longest of any Camel this season.

The Camels and Mountaineers are back tomorrow for the series rubber match at 1 p.m. Aaron Rund is expected to get the start for the Camels.
