Smith tosses one-hitter as Camels split games with PC

Redshirt-freshman Smith retires 16 straight, strikes out career-high 12 batters in 4-0 win

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Isabella Smith threw a one-hitter and struck out a career-high 12 batters as Campbell split games in its doubleheader against Presbyterian on Saturday afternoon at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.

Campbell moves to 15-11 overall and 4-4 in conference play while Big South leaders Presbyterian moves to 20-6 and 6-2.

Game One - Presbyterian 4, Campbell 0
Presbyterian struck early after a pair of infield hits put runners on the corners in the first inning. First baseman Jillian Hewes hit one through the right side to score one run before Kayla Howald ended the inning with a strikeout.

Campbell had a chance to even the score in the third inning as Tyra Parker beat out an infield bunt and Alexa Pagano earned a walk with one out before Presbyterian's Jenna Greene struck out the final two batters to end the Camels threat.

Layna Johnson extended the Blue Hose lead as she blasted a two-run home run to right field in the fifth inning. Johnson later added an insurance run in the seventh on a RBI double to right center.

Greene (10-3) finished with a complete game shutout performance in the circle for PC with two hits, nine strikeouts and five walks. Howald (1-3) gave up nine hits, two walks and six strikeouts in the loss.

Game Two - Campbell 4, Presbyterian 0
Smith retired 16 straight batters and picked up her third shutout of the season to lead Campbell to victory in game two.

Campbell took an early 1-0 lead as Delaney McDilda drove in a run on a single to right center. The Camels continued to aid Smith in the circle later in the fourth inning with two outs as Sterling Hairston reached on a throwing error by the pitcher. Madeleine Whitely hit a RBI triple to left field and eventually scored on Pagano's hit to left field in the next at bat.

Savannah White added another run to Campbell's tally in the sixth inning, scoring on a wild pitch after hitting a triple to right center.

Smith's career 12 strikeouts marked the most in a game since Georgeanna Barefoot's punched out 12 against Coastal Carolina in 2020. This is the second one-hitter Smith has thrown this season. The redshirt-freshman pitcher improves to a 6-5 record on the year.

Morgan Hess (9-2) took her second loss of the season after giving up five hits, one earned run and striking out only two batters in four innings of work.
