HIGH POINT, N.C. –
Sam Bischoff tallied a career-high nine points, leading Campbell to a 17-14 win at High Point in its Big South opener Wednesday at Vert Stadium.
Campbell moved to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in Big South play, while HPU fell to 1-8 on the season and 0-1 to start the conference season. The Camels' win snapped a 26 match Big South winning streak for the Panthers, winners of the last four Big South championships.
The win also marked the first for the Camels over the Panthers, who claimed the first 12 meetings of the all-time series.
Bischoff posted a career-high seven goals to go along with two assists, while
Julianna Sanchez registered five points on a goal and four assists, adding five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Bischoff's seven goals are the most for a Camel in a single game since Mackenzie Koeller registered eight scores twice in 2018.
Megan Matthews and
Rasa Welsh also notched four points apiece, with Matthews totaling two goals and two assists, and Welsh scoring three times with a helper.
Emma Strickland anchored the defensive end with 12 saves in front of the cage, including eight in the second half, while
Katie Ochall picked up a career-high eight ground balls with seven draw controls.
Rebekah Taylor also collected six ground balls with two caused turnovers, while
Mia Lee caused three turnovers with three ground balls for the Camels.
The Panthers lead 7-6 with 4:25 remaining in the second period after Nicole Pugh's second straight goal, but back to back Campbell scores from Bischoff and Matthews in the final 11 seconds of the half gave the Camels the 8-7 lead at the break.
The CU streak continued into the third quarter, wrapping a six goal run around the half that including two more Bischoff goals, putting the visiting Camels up 12-7 with 5:46 on the clock in the third.
Hormes brought the Panthers back within two with 7:33 remaining with her third goal of the night, but Welsh answered for the Camels 2:37 later, returning the CU advantage to three, and HPU came up empty on its final three shot attempts of the game, giving Campbell the road victory.
Pugh, Hormes and Mena Loescher each posted four points for the Panthers, with Pugh and Hormes scoring three goals apiece, along with Pia Cavallaro. Hormes also added six ground balls, while Taylor Suplee made 10 saves.
Next up, Campbell will return home on April 2, hosting Winthrop for its 2022 Senior Day and Alumni Day.
