BUIES CREEK, N.C. –
Ally Heath and
Megan Matthews combined for 12 points, leading Campbell over Winthrop 17-10 in its Big South home opener on Saturday at Barker-Lane Stadium.
Campbell (5-4, 2-0 Big South) outshot the Eagles (1-9, 0-2 Big South) 39-18 while forcing 22 turnovers on the day. CU also celebrated its Senior Day and Alumni Day prior to the contest. The 2022 season marks the 10
th year of competition for the program.
Heath scored a career-high five goals with two assists, while Matthews posted three goals and two assists to lead the Camels.
Sam Bischoff also scored three goals, with
Mackenzie Kolesar and
Shania Roehrich added two goals and an assists each.
Kaitlyn Gallagher also dished out three assists for CU.
Defensively,
Mia Lee forced four Eagle turnovers with three ground balls, and
Rebekah Taylor caused three turnovers with three ground balls.
Annie Ryan tacked on three ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers.
Lauren Asher paced Winthrop with four points on three goals and an assist, with Ellie Dutton, Savanah Paton and Molly Dankowski all collecting a goal and two assists. Asher also registered five ground balls with three caused turnovers, while Kelsey Johnson made 11 saves for the Eagles.
After taking an 8-2 lead into the halftime break on the strength of six different scorers, including three goals from Bischoff, Campbell extended its advantage to 10-2 at the 13:11 mark of the third on
Joslin Hanbury's goal off the feed from Gallagher.
The Eagles, however, responded with a 4-0 spurt that included two Claire Witmer scores, lengthening their run to 7-2 early in the fourth quarter (13:23) on Dankowski's goal, cutting the Campbell lead to 12-9.
Campbell, however, closed the game with a 5-1 run over the final 10:53 that including two Matthews' goals, plus a goal and two assists from Heath.
Campbell will continue Big South play next week on the road, heading to Radford (April 6) and Longwood (April 9). The Camels return home on April 13, hosting Gardner-Webb.
