Campbell falls to UNC in front of record crowd

Amanda Littlejohn Stadium attendance record set at 634

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell fell to North Carolina 3-0 in front of the largest crowd ever recorded at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium on Wednesday night.

Campbell drops to 22-14 overall while the Tar Heels improve to 21-20.

A record crowd of 634 fans were on hand for the game, the most since the the stadium was renovated and renamed after former Campbell softball standout Amanda Littlejohn before the 2013 season.

Alyssa Henault went 2-for-4 with two doubles while Noemi Cortez added a double of her own.

Campbell's best opportunity of the night came in the fifth inning as Samantha Fontaine reached on a fielding error, Savannah White connected on a pinch-hit single and Tyra Parker earned a walk to load the bases. The Tar Heels replaced starting pitcher Carlie Myrtle with Lilli Backes who forced the final outs of the inning to neutralize the Camels threat.

North Carolina scored all three of its runs in the sixth inning on a RBI single and a two-run home run.

Isabella Smith (10-6) was tagged with the loss after giving up the deciding runs in the sixth inning. Smith struck out four batters, walked one and allowed five hits. Georgeanna Barefoot entered in relief in the seventh, striking out one batter.

Backes (7-13) picked up the win in the circle for the Tar Heels. The relief pitcher entered in the fourth inning, striking out three batters and allowing only one hit. Myrtle gave up four hits and walked one batter in 4.1 innings of work before being replaced.

Campbell faces a quick turnaround as it travels to Radford for games on Friday and Saturday.
