Camels down GWU 12-8, remain unbeaten in Big South play

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Rebekah Taylor tied a school record with five caused turnovers and Megan Matthews registered six points to lead Campbell over Gardner-Webb 12-8 on Wednesday.

The Camels (8-4, 5-0 Big South) matched their best ever start in Big South play, tying the program's 2017 mark, taking their seventh straight meeting against the Runnin' Bulldogs (6-7, 2-3 Big South).

Taylor's five caused turnovers tied a program single-game record held by three other Camels (Erin O'Hara: 4/08/14 vs. Davidson and 4/19/15 vs. GWU; Cloey Henchcliffe: 4/13/14 at Longwood; Megan Reilly 2/10/18 at Richmond), adding four ground balls in the win.

Matthews, meanwhile, notched three goals and three assists, tacking on two ground balls and a caused turnover for the Camels.

Campbell led 5-1 early in the second period off two goals and an assist from Matthews before the Runnin' Bulldogs reeled off four straight, including Lauren Deavers' score to tie the game at 5-5 with 4:43 to go before the half.

Shania Roehrich's free position goal with 3:46 gave CU a 6-5 lead at the break. The Camels made it a 4-0 run to start the third quarter, bookended by another Roehrich goal. Joslin Hanbury and Lexi McDaniel added fourth quarter scores, helping Campbell hold on for the 12-8 win.

Roehrich, Hanbury and Sam Bischoff all tallied two goals apiece for the Camels, with Bischoff added two caused turnovers. Mia Lee picked up four ground balls and caused a turnover, while Emma Strickland made eight saves and registered five ground balls.

Campbell's opponent posted 20 turnovers for the fourth straight game, while doubling up GWU on the draw, 16-8. CU also earned 30 ground balls to the Runnin Bulldogs' 19, outshooting Gardner-Webb 35-22.
