Camels sweep Aggies with 17-1 win

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Campbell swept a third straight Big South series with a 17-1 win over NC A&T Thursday at War Memorial Stadium. The Camels scored 47 runs on 46 hits across the three-game series to win their 12th straight game.

The win improves Campbell to 22-12, 11-1 in the Big South while the Aggies fall to 12-22, 1-11 in the league.

Amid all the offense, Cade Boxrucker turned in a great day on the mound, tossing a career-long five innings while tallying a career-high seven strikes. He surrendered a leadoff home run and then two singles in the first three batters he faced, but was lights out after that. The sophomore did not allow another hit over the next five innings, and retired eight of the final nine batters he faced.

Following Boxrucker, the trio of Beymer, Cummings and Murray worked the final four innings and allowed just one hit and no runs. After the first three batters of the game, the Aggies had only one more hit on the afternoon, a single in the sixth inning.

Connor Denning and Jarrod Belbin each drove in four runs on the afternoon to pace the offense, Denning doing so with a two home run day. Tyler Halstead notched his second four-hit day of the season thanks in part to three bunt singles. Halstead finished 4-6 with four runs scored.

Campbell took the lead for the first time with a three-run third inning on four hits in the frame. The Camels also posted three in the seventh before fully blowing the game open with an eight-run ninth.

The ninth inning featured home runs from Denning and Babin, a triple from Belbin, and seven total hits to push the lead to 16.

The offense was once again aided by Aggie pitching, issuing seven walks and plunky Waldy Arias twice. The Aggies also committed five errors on the afternoon leading to eight unearned runs.

Boxrucker (2-0) picked up the win for his start, while A&T starter Peyton Winebarger (2-4) was tagged with the loss.

The Camels are back in action Tuesday night in Chapel Hill to face North Carolina. First pitch at Boshamer Stadium is set for 8 p.m. on ACC Network.
