Camels win 6th-straight Big South Championship

Garre Munoz birdie on 4th playoff hole secures title

NINETY SIX, S.C. – Patricia Garre Munoz rolled in a downhill 17-foot birdie putt on the fourth playoff hole to deliver the deciding point and give top-seeded Campbell a 3-2 win over second seed USC Upstate in the Big South Conference women's golf match play championship Saturday at The Patriot GC at Grand Harbor.

For the second-straight year, Garre Munoz provided the deciding point in the title match – in extra holes.  On Saturday, she birdied the par-five 18th to draw level in her match with Beem Pabsimma, saved par on a tricky downhill 12 footer on the second extra hole, then converted the winner on the par-3 fourth.

Tomita Arejola and Sanna Lundmark posted the Camels to a 2-0 lead with 4&3 victories.  Upstate's Praew Nontarux made birdie on the 18th to extend her match with stroke play champion Anna Nordfors, then won on the 20th hole.  Suwarin Yordin defeated Emily Hawkins for Upstate's first point.

No. 38 Campbell claimed its sixth-consecutive Big South title and will compete in the NCAA regionals for the 10th-straight time.  The 2022 NCAA Regional selection show is set for Apr. 27 at 5 p.m. EDT on GOLF Channel.

"This turned on a dime; it could have gone any way on multiple putts, shots, irons and decisions," said Campbell head coach John Crooks.  "Patricia was fabulous, but so was Tomi and Sanna; they both won their matches convincingly.  Anna came from 3 down to force extra holes and Emily came from 3 down to extend her match to 17 holes.  We're fortunate to be the Big South Conference champions."

In Saturday morning's semifinal, fourth seed UNC Asheville extended the Camels to the final hole before Arejola clinched the deciding point in a 3-2 win.

A senior from Quezon City, Philippines, Arejola won the par-3 17th hole with a par, then claimed victory after Asheville's Madyson Gold conceded on the par-five 18th.  Lundmark (5&3) and Hawkins (3&2) also won semifinal matches for CU.

Now in his 31st year in charge of the Campbell women's program, Crooks has guided the Camels to 18 league titles, including a Big South record 10 women's championships.  Campbell has finished either first or second in its conference championship 28 times in the past 30 occasions the event was held.  The 2020 Big South Championship was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
