4 Camels all-conference; Pennings top freshman

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Marissa Pennings was named Big South freshman of the year and joined by three teammates on the league's women's tennis all-conference teams.

Pennings and fellow freshman Mialy Ranaivo were named to the first-team all-conference singles unit, while Ranaivo and Rhona Cook were chosen to the doubles first team. Sandra Gines and Cook were named to the singles all-league second team, while Cook earned a place on the Big South all-academic team.

Campbell (14-7, 7-1) finished as runner-up in the Big South regular season standings and won the last nine matches.

Pennings finished the spring season with a 16-5 overall record in dual matches, 8-0 in conference play and won 11-straight contests from Mar. 5-Apr. 2.  Her only loss in the final six weeks of the season came in a third set super tiebreaker.  A native of Clearwater, Fla., Pennings was named Big South freshman of the week four times and player of the week once during the 2022 campaign.

Ranaivo finished her freshman season with a 12-6 overall record in singles play, 7-1 against Big South opponents.  The native of Antananarivo, Madagascar won 10 of her last 11 singles matches while splitting time between the top three places in the order and was twice named Big South freshman of the week.

Cook and Ranaivo were unbeaten in six league doubles matches and finished 11-5 overall, 10-5 at the number one position.  The duo posted an eight-match unbeaten string from Mar. 9-Apr. 6 and helped the Camels capture the doubles point eight times in their last nine duals.

A sophomore from Chester, England, Cook also finished with a 10-11 overall singles record, primarily at the number one position.  Gines, a sophomore from Reus, Spain, was 7-1 in conference play and finished 15-6 overall in singles.  She won 12 of her last 14 matches.

In addition to earning all-conference recognition for a second-straight year, Cook collected all-academic notice for the first time.  She owns a 3.85 grade-point average as an international business major.

Under third-year head coach Mike Stevens, Campbell posted its highest regular season finish since re-joining the Big South in 2011-12.  CU's only league loss was to regular season champion Charleston Southern. The Camels will not compete in the Big South Championship due to Covid-19 protocols within the CU program.
