Camels split pair against Lancers

Ware leads Camels to win following walk-off hit in game two

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell split its pair of games against Longwood Saturday at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.

Longwood (24-21, 15-5) earned a 3-2 win over Campbell (27-15, 14-6) in the first game. The Camels battled back to win 3-2 (8 inn.) in the second game of the series on a walk-off hit by Claudia Ware.

Longwood 3, Campbell 2 - Game 1
A RBI single through the left side in the seventh scored the deciding run as Longwood earned a 3-2 win over Campbell to open the series.

The Lancers went up 2-0 after scoring runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Samantha Fontaine answered and knocked a two-run blast over the left field wall to knot the score.

After Longwood regained its lead in the seventh, Campbell put two on as Kayla Fredendall and Savannah White both reached on hits until a fly-out ended the Camels threat.

Sydney Backstrom (17-9) picked up her 17th win on the season for the Lancers, giving up four hits, two earned runs and striking out seven in a complete game effort.

Georgeanna Barefoot (11-5) took the loss for CU after scattering seven hits, allowing two earned runs and striking out seven batters.

Campbell 3, Longwood 2 (8 inn.) - Game 2
Campbell started the scoring in the second game as Delaney McDilda's sacrifice fly to center field scored Samantha Fontaine in the fourth inning.

Sydney Jacobsen evened the score for Longwood on her RBI double in sixth. The Lancers would take a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth after scoring behind another RBI double down the left field line.

Trailing in the bottom of the eighth, Campbell started its rally with White reaching on a fielding error by the Lancers pitcher. In the next at bat, Tyra Parker beat out a throw to first on a bunt. Alyssa Henault then advanced both runners on a sacrifice bunt towards third base.

With two runners in scoring position, Ware connected for a hit through the right side to win the game. It marked the second time in three games the Camels have won on a walk-off hit in extra innings after defeating UNC Greensboro 5-4 in 11 innings on Wednesday.

Backstrom (17-10) took the loss after entering in the 8th inning and giving up the deciding runs.

Isabella Smith (12-6) pitched another gem for Campbell, allowing seven hits and two earned runs. Smith matched her career-high with 12 strikeouts in another compete game outing.
