ROCK HILL, S.C. - Campbell continued its battle for the top of the Big South standings after winning both games of its doubleheader against Winthrop Saturday at Terry Field.
Campbell improves to 30-15 and 17-6 in the Big South while the Eagles fall to 18-33 and 10-13 in conference play.
Campbell 3, Winthrop 1 (Game One)
Campbell earned a 3-1 victory over Winthrop in the first game of the series, aided by another stellar performance in the circle Georgeanna Barefoot.
Barefoot (13-5) tossed her 16th complete game of the season, giving up just four hits and one earned run while striking out 10 batters.
The Camels scored one run early in the first inning as Alyssa Henault reached on an error and eventually moved to third following two groundouts. A wild pitch from Winthrop starter Reese Basinger gave Henault enough to touch home plate.
Winthrop answered in the bottom of the first, knotting the score on a solo home run by Kaitlyn Tucker.
Alexa Pagano and Samantha Fontaine would break the tie in the third inning with back-to-back RBI hits to put Campbell back on top 3-1.
Fontaine went 2-for-3 with a RBI while Noemi Cortez scored a run and earned three walks.
Campbell 5, Winthrop 2 (Game Two)
Pagano and Savannah White both hit home runs in the third inning, powering Campbell to a 5-2 win over Winthrop in the second game of the doubleheader.
Claudia Ware started the third inning with a infield single where she immediately stole second. Delaney McDilda reached on a fielder's choice leading to Pagano's third home run of the season. Jaimee Hardy, who made her season debut at the plate, drew a walk while White hit her first career homer to put the Camels up 5-0.
The Eagles got two back in the bottom half of the third as a bunt single, stolen base and an error put one run on the board. A RBI double gave Winthrop another run before the end of the inning.
Isabella Smith (13-6) picked up her 13th win of the season after striking out six batters, allowing no earned runs and giving up just three hits in a complete game effort.
