BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Fighting Camels secured their third Big South series win with a 14-9 victory over USC Upstate Saturday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium.
Cade Kuehler earned his first win of the year on the mound thanks to ample early run support from the Camel offense.
The win improves Campbell to 17-12, 7-1 in the Big South while USC Upstate drops to 18-13, 7-4 in the league.
Campbell's offense wasted no time putting up runs, with three in the first thanks to a sac fly and three straight two-out hits. The two-out runs were key for Campbell all afternoon, who scored 10 of the 14 runs with two outs.
Zach Neto tacked on another run with a mammoth 452' home run to lead off the third inning. The blast was longest of the season by a Camel (based on available data).
After the teams traded runs in the third, the Camels took a commanding 12-1 lead with an eight-run fourth inning and all eight scoring with two outs. Campbell had just four hits in the frame, but Upstate pitching also walked five.
Waldy Arias delivered the big blow and capped the scoring with a three-run blast, his third of the season.
Upstate did not go quietly and tagged the Campbell bullpen for eight runs in the final third of the game. Devin Buckner hit a grand slam in the seventh, and the Spartans had the bases loaded again in the eighth before a big strikeout ended the threat.
Campbell added two more of its own across the seventh and eighth innings to keep a comfortable lead and pick up the win.
Five Camels tallied multi—hit games, led by Arias going 2-4 with a career-high four RBI on the afternoon. Babin, Pierson and Neto all drove in two runs as well.
Kuehler posted a final line of 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 Ks to get the win. Campbell then used five more pitchers to piece together the final four innings of work.
Upstate's Austin Morgan was tagged with the loss, allowing 12 runs in 3.2 innings.
The teams meet again tomorrow at 2 p.m. as Campbell looks for its second consecutive Big South series sweep.
Aaron Rund is expected to be on the mound for the Camels.
