Women's soccer announces 2022 schedule

Reigning Big South regular season champs play 17 games, four against NCAA Tournament teams

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Head coach Jeff Gross has announced the 2022 Campbell women's soccer schedule. The defending Big South regular season champions open the 17-match schedule hosting Mercer on Aug. 18 and will host eight matches. The slate features four teams that made the NCAA Tournament last season.

"I have appreciated hearing expert versions for how coaches at Campbell get their teams and players to compete at such a high level," Gross said. "Pressure is a privilege – we've all likely heard the quote before, and we were all reminded of this recently."

"Campbell women's soccer players love to compete, enjoy challenges, and believe in Campbell. This schedule is a reflection of the combined efforts of coaches who understand the nature of these women and this program. We are playing good teams who are well coached and this will bring out the best in all of us. Roll Humps!"

Following preseason exhibitions at home against Elon (Aug. 9) and at The Citadel (Aug. 13), the Fighting Camels open their campaign at home against Mercer on Aug. 18. The contest will be the 21st between the former A-Sun rivals and first since 2010.

Three straight road games against 2021 NCAA Tournament teams follow the home opener,  starting with back-to-back games against ACC opponents. The road swings begins at Clemson on Aug. 21 marking the first-ever meeting against the Tigers. Clemson earned an at-large bid to last year's NCAA Tournament.

Four days later Campbell makes a short trip to face NC State on Aug. 25. The Camels battled to a 1-1 (2OT) draw against the Wolfpack in last season's home opener. NC State ended its season last year in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Liberty, who earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament after winning the A-Sun tournament last season, marks the end of the road swing on Aug. 28. It marks the 16th all-time meeting between former Big South foes and first since 2018.

Campbell returns home on Sep. 1 hosting Richmond before heading back on the road to face Coastal Carolina (Sep. 4) and Wofford (Sep. 8).

The non-conference schedule concludes at home as the Camels host in-state rivals UNCW on Sep. 15.

The Big South portion of the schedule starts on Sep. 21 as the Camels hit the road to face Radford. Campbell has defeated the Radford in the semifinals of the Big South Championship in each of the past two seasons.

The Camels welcome Winthrop to Buies Creek on Sep. 24 before hosting High Point in a rematch of last season's Big South Championship final on Sep. 28.

Campbell alternates home and away games for the remainder of the conference schedule, heading to Gardner-Webb on Oct. 1 and hosting Presbyterian on Oct. 7. The Camels visit Charleston Southern on Oct. 12 followed by hosting USC Upstate on Oct. 15.

The final week of the regular season has the Camels traveling to UNC Asheville on Oct. 22 before closing out at home against Longwood on Oct. 26.

The Big South Championship will be a four-team tournament with all games played in Matthews, N.C. at the Matthews Sportsplex. The semifinal is set for Nov. 3 followed by the tournament final on Nov. 6.

Campbell went 12-4-2 overall last season, winning its first Big South regular season crown in program history. The Camels held one of the top-ranked offenses in the nation posting the seventh-best scoring offense averaging 2.78 goals per game and ranking fourth overall in points per game at 8.61.
