Campbell's season ends in Knoxville

KNOXVILLE, TENN. – The Fighting Camels saw their season come to an end with a 16-5 loss to Georgia Tech Sunday afternoon in Knoxville, Tenn. Campbell finishes the season with a 41-19  mark, tied for the second-most wins in program history.

Campbell struggled to get consistent outs against the potent Yellow Jacket offense that collected 19 hits on the afternoon, the most allowed by Campbell this season. Georgia Tech scored in seven of nine innings during the game, and were only retired in order in the ninth inning.

Campbell led briefly at 2-1 after one inning following a Zach Neto RBI double and Drake Pierson sac fly, but GT responded with a five-spot in the second inning off Campbell starter Jonathan Beymer. The Yellow Jackets found plenty of success against Beymer, tagging him for 10 runs in 3.2 innings of work.

Campbell added a run in each the second and third, but couldn't muster any more offense until the ninth inning.

Facing a home run hitting team, Campbell largely kept the ball in the yard allowing just one GT home run among the 19 hits, but did surrender three doubles and 15 singles. Campbell also helped out by issuing nine free passes and committing three errors. Much of the early damage was done with two outs, with GT hitting 7-16 with two outs and collecting five two-out RBI, all coming in the early stages.

It was also Campbell's first game without a home run since April 24, with at least one big fly in 21 consecutive games.

Campbell collected four hits in the first three innings while scoring four runs to chase GT starter Marquis Grissom. Reliver Josiah Siegel was nearly lights out in 6.1 innings to finish the game for GT, allowing just one hit over his first five innings of work before two inconsequential doubles and a run in the ninth.

Connor Denning reached four times with two hits and two walks. Halstead collected a pair of hits as well as Campbell collected just seven on the day.

Ty Babin was relieved of his catching duties prior to the ninth inning and exited to a standing ovation. The fifth-year senior appeared in 155 games for Campbell and posted a career-year in 2022, batting .319 with 14 HR and 50 RBI.

This year's team set plenty of program records, including home runs (118), runs scored (523) and stolen bases (132). On the other side of the ball, the pitching staff held opponents to the second lowest average in program history (.242) and tied the record for saves (20). Individually, Thomas Harrington and Cade Kuehler tied for the single-season strikeout record with 111 each.
