BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell's tennis and track & field programs earned high praise from fellow student-athletes when the men's tennis, men's indoor and outdoor track & field and women's indoor track & field teams were named as winners of the 2022 Big South Sportsmanship awards.
The team awards are voted on by Big South student-athletes and are awarded at the end of each competitive season.
The men's tennis team won the Big South regular season title with a perfect 7-0 league record, finished 16-6 overall and was runner-up to Radford in the conference championship. Six times during regular season or tournament play, the Camels played to a one-point decision in duals matches, including both the conference semifinal and title contests.
"Our players' interaction with others throughout the year was almost always highly competitive but overall respectful," said men's tennis head coach
David Johnson. "This really promoted a positive atmosphere, one that we used to our advantage. I felt that was equally demonstrated amongst our Big South opponents and others. I was proud of how they conducted themselves, especially in so many close conference matches."
Under the guidance of first-year head coach
Virgil Givens, the men's indoor track & field team won its first Big South title and finished third in a tightly contested outdoor championship. The Campbell women finished fourth in the indoor championships.
"This award caps off a great year and a start for our team on what we are working to accomplish here," said Givens. "We are thankful and honored that what we are building here is being recognized. It's a testament to what a great culture these athletes are building."
