BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell scored on its first five trips to the red zone and defeated The Citadel 29-10 Thursday night in the season opener at Barker-Lane Stadium.
Bryant Barr rushed for a career-high 107 yards on 19 carries and the Camels (1-0) did not allow a Bulldog (0-1) touchdown until 2:53 remained in the game.
The Camels out-gained the Bulldogs (0-1) 373-222 and averaged 6.2 yards per play.
Hajj-Malik Williams completed 12-of-21 passes for 175 yards and one score.
Cooper Wallace led The Citadel's option offense with 53 rushing yards on 10 carries.
A graduate student from Greensboro, Barr averaged 5.6 yards per carry.
Lamagea McDowell averaged 7.2 yards while gaining 36 yards on five rushes, adding a touchdown.
The Campbell defense forced three turnovers, including interceptions on two of Peyton Derrick's five pass attempts.
CJ Tillman had 11 tackles, including nine solo stops, forced and recovered a fumble, while
Jonathan Jones and
Peyton Woulard had picks for the Camels.
The Camels took the opening kickoff and drove 74 yards in six plays to take the lead on Williams' 14-yard pass to
Ezeriah Anderson.
Colby Kintner made a 33-yard field goal to cap The Citadel's opening drive and trim the margin to 7-3. However, Campbell scored 22 unanswered points.
McDowell's 7-yard rush and Dowden's PAT ended a 10-play, 74-yard march to stretch the lead to 14-3 with 14:18 to play in the half. Dowden added a 36-yard field goal and the Camels led 17-3 at the half.
A pair of Dowden field goals – from 31 and 26 yards – pushed the margin to 23-3 after three quarters before Barr rank in from two yards with 5:57 left in the fourth.
Derrick connected with Tyler Cherry on a 19-yard TD reception with 2:53 to play.
Anderson led Campbell with four receptions for 65 yards.
Campbell travels to William and Mary Sept. 10 for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff.
