Campbell defeats Richmond 3-0

Neal's early goal, Backlund's brace lead Camels past Spiders

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Kaleigh Backlund netted two goals while Olivia Neal added another as Campbell defeated Richmond 3-0 for its first win of the season.

Campbell improves to 1-3-1 on the season while Richmond drops to 1-2-1. The win marked the first for Jeff Gross as a head coach and with the Camels.

Neal put the Camels on the board just 34 seconds into the match as she collected Bayleigh Humbert's shot off the Richmond keeper and scored.

Campbell doubled its lead in the 40th minute as Jackie Richards crossed a ball into the box from the left corner of the field to an oncoming Backlund who used her right foot to score.

Backlund found the back of the net again just four minutes later on a blast just outside the box thanks to a double-assist from Cazzi Norgren and Elyssa Nowowieski.

It marked the third career brace for Backlund who scored two goals last season in wins over Presbyterian and Gardner-Webb.

"I think it's really exciting," Backlund said on the win. "We've been working really hard in practice and to see it all pay off in this game is what we needed for our confidence and to prove that we can continue to build on it and be more consistent."

Richmond's best chance of the evening came in the 28th minute as Emma Coleman's shot on goal was saved by Stephanie Martelli.

The Camels held a 18-8 edge on shots, including an 8-3 advantage for shots on goal over the Spiders. Backlund led with five shots in 54 minutes off the bench. Richards added three shots while both Jessica Donald and Cazzi Norgren added two apiece.

Martelli picked up her fifth career shutout in goal for Campbell, making three saves on the night.

Campbell heads back on the road again for a Sunday match at Coastal Carolina. Kickoff in Conway, S.C. is set for 7 p.m. at the CCU Soccer Stadium.
