Camels win Golfweek Fall Challenge

Arejola individual runner-up as CU ties school 54-hole scoring record

PAWLEY'S ISLAND, S.C. – Campbell won the Golfweek Fall Challenge in record-tying fashion Tuesday at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club.

With four golfers among the top 15 individuals, the Camels finished at 18-under par 834 (279-277-278), matching the school record set by the 2018 squad at the same venue.  UNCW finished 16 strokes back in second place in the 20-team field.

Fifth-year senior Tomita Arejola finished as individual runner-up at 8-under 205 (70-70-65) and posted a collegiate career low in Tuesday's final round.  She made eight birdies on the day and posted the second-lowest round in Campbell's 34-year women's program history.  Her 205 stands as the third-lowest 54-hole total in school record books.

Arejola led the 104-golfer field with 19 birdies, was second in par-5 scoring (-6) and T5th in par-3 scoring (-3) on the par-71 Mike Strantz design.

Red-shirt freshman Izabella Grimbrandt tied for eighth place at 3-under 210 (70-69-71) and topped the field with 45 pars.  Junior Sanna Lundmark posted a bogey-free, career-low 68 Tuesday and finished T8th (73-69-68—210).  She made 40 pars (fourth in the field) over 54 holes.

Isabella Hahne (70-69-74—213) and Taylah Ellems (69-74-76—219) tied for 15th and 32nd, respectively, in their collegiate debuts.  Hahne made 12 birdies and Ellems 11 on the 6526-yard layout.

Tied with Austin Peay and Lipscomb through 18 holes, Campbell pulled away and played the final two rounds 13-under par as a team.  CU led the field in birdies (57), par-3 (-7) and par-4 (+6) scoring.

The Camels turned in the third-, sixth- and eighth-lowest team scores in program history and broke the school 36-hole record (556) by four shots.

Erica Scutt of Austin Peay (64-66-74—204) claimed individual medalist honors.

Under the direction of 32-year head coach John Crooks, Campbell has made 10-straight NCAA Regional appearances.  CU has won six team titles (2012, 2013, 2015, 2018, 2021, 2022) and finished as runner-up twice at Caledonia.

Tuesday's victory marked the 97th team title under Crooks' direction.  He stands second behind only Duke's Dan Brooks (140) in NCAA women's golf tournament coaching wins.

Campbell returns to action Oct. 3-5 in the Aggie Invitational, at the New Mexico State University Golf Course in Las Cruces, N.M.

The Course – Caledonia Golf & Fish Club (Par 71, 6526 yards): Caledonia was ranked No.-27 in in Golf Magazine's 2014 "Top 100 You Can Play" and is annually ranked on "America's 100 Greatest Public courses" list by Golf Digest.  The 6,526-yard Mike Strantz design has been described as having "18 signature holes," with holes routed around majestic oaks and meandering streams. The picturesque 18th hole borders the Plantation's old rice field, and requires a precise tee shot that sets up a difficult second shot: a forced carry onto a green at the foot of the clubhouse.
