Backlund's game-winner lifts Camels past Winthrop 2-1

Camels unbeaten in last six

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Kaleigh Backlund scored the game-winner with 1:14 left to lift Campbell to a 2-1 win over Winthrop Saturday night at Eakes Athletics Complex.

Unbeaten in its last six outings, Campbell improves to 5-3-2 overall and 1-0-1 in Big South play. Winthrop falls to 3-3-2 overall and 0-1-1 in league play.

Jessica Donald scored the opening goal in the 42nd minute, tapping the ball in with her left foot off a Jackie Richards cross.

The Camels maintained their lead throughout the intermission and most of the second half until the Eagles found the back of the net in the 73rd minute as Annabel Thomas used her back heel to score.

Following the Winthrop goal the Camels turned up the intensity on the offensive end striking 14 shots over the final 17 minutes. Backlund eventually found the game-winner in the 89th minute, scoring after receiving a well-executed throw in from Donald.

Campbell dominated possession, owning the ball for 67% of the match and leading to a season-high 35 shots and 16 corner kicks.

Winthrop was limited to five shots, including just two on goal, and two corners for the match.

Freshman goalkeeper Sierra Vance, who made her first career start, had one save. Winthrop keeper Izzy Giarizzi totaled nine saves.

Campbell returns next Wednesday as it hosts cross-state rival High Point for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff at Eakes.
