SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Campbell and USC Upstate played to a 2-2 draw in the Big South Conference men's soccer opener for both teams Sunday night at County University Stadium.
Kemy Amiche and
Jalen James staked Campbell (4-2-3, 0-0-1) to a 2-1 halftime lead, but Luke Halkett equalized for the Spartans (2-4-2, 0-0-1) in the 82nd minute.
The Camels had three clear chances to add to their lead in the second half.
Daniel Hernandez collected a turnover in the Upstate end and forced Upstate keeper Luca Bulfon to make a diving save after 55 minutes.
Edu Rodriguez left his feet for a save off a deflected shot by Upstate's Jeremy Montero to preserve the lead.
James split the Upstate back line with a pass to
Adrian Morales in the 67th minute, but Bulfon charged off his line and was able to get a hand on the Camel forward's shot to make the save.
In the 80th minute,
Moses Mensah drove a low cross into the Upstate box, but
Gerard Broussard's volley went directly into Bulfon's hands.
Halkett beat Rodriguez to a high ball in the Camel area and headed in his first career goal at 81:08.
Campbell finished with a 14-11 edge in shots, 10-7 in attempts on target. Rodriguez finished with five saves in the Camel nets, while Bulfon made eight stops for Upstate.
Amiche put the Camels in front in the 18th minute when he took a pass from
Kyoji Hata, dribbled across the top of the area and curled a left-footed shot into the upper left corner for his fifth goal of the season.
The Camels nearly doubled the advantage on
Jalen James' shot in the box that beat Bulfon, but caromed off the cross bar.
Upstate equalized on a free kick just over four minutes later. Felipe Marty sent a left-footed cross into the area that Andrin Zumbuhl headed in from a sharp angle for his second goal of the year.
Amiche set up the go-ahead goal in the 40th minute when he dribbled between two Spartan defender at the edge of the box but was fouled. James sent Bulfon the wrong way on the resulting PK for his fourth goal this year.
NOTES: CU stands 27-1-5 in its last 33 games (regular season and tournament) vs. Big South foes, including a 21-1-3 mark in regular season play over the last four seasons... Campbell owns an 8-1-3 record all-time vs. the Spartans and is unbeaten (7-0-3) in the series since USC Upstate moved to Division I in 2007… Campbell hosts Winthrop Saturday (Oct. 1) in a 3:30 p.m. kickoff at the Eakes Complex.
