BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After a 29-10 win over The Citadel to open the 2022 season, Campbell's
Caleb Dowden and
CJ Tillman have been named Big South players of the week.
Dowden was named the league's special teams player of the week, while Tillman garnered top defensive honors.
Dowden, playing in his first game as a Camel, went a perfect 3-for-3 on field goal tries, helping Campbell score on all six of its red zone opportunities in Thursday's win over The Citadel. Dowden nailed kicks from 36, 31 and 26 yards in the 29-10 win, all on consecutive drives, extending the CU lead to 23-3 with 2:43 remaining in the third quarter. Dowden also added a pair of extra point kicks in the win.
Tillman, meanwhile, a 2021 Freshman All-American, delivered a game-high 11 tackles with a forced fumble, as well as a fumble recovery against the Bulldogs. The sophomore tallied nine solo tackles, helping hold the Bulldogs to 222 total yards (187 rushing, 35 passing) with three turnovers. Thursday marked Tillman's fourth career double digit tackle game, also tying a career-high with 11 stops.
Tillman was also named an honorable mention for
FedEx Ground FCS National Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts.
Next up, Campbell travels to No. 20 William & Mary on September 10 for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff.
